Greetings,

I just updated to Fedora 16 and Kmail said I needed to convert my email to a database. It did convert all my folders, however there isn't any email in the folders. I do have about 4GB of email and the conversion did happen rather fast, about 2 minutes.

Since no workarounds have been posted. I assume there is a bug in the conversion program.

Is there some way to get back to the Fedora 15 kdepim package? I use gnome but just loved Kmail and Kaddressbook. I believe just Fedora 16 has the new database implementation. I looked "Add/Remove Software" and there isn't a previous version to install. Is there a previous version somewhere that I could install until the conversion problem is fixed?

I'm not sure how to solve the problem as the post is light on details, rest assure however that no mail has been lost: the pre-migration data is still there and it has not been deleted unless you explicitly wanted that.

Thanks for your reply einar.

The conversion created all the folders I had in the previous version, however all the folders are empty. Not a single email was transferred. Some of these folders had thousands of emails. The conversion said it was successful.

I looked in .kde and there is a kmail and kmail2 folder. Yes, all my files are still intact in the kmail folder. The kmail folder is 4.7GB. I have 184 folders.

The conversion happened in about 2 minutes. I would have expected something in the way of an hour, since each email would have required a entry in the database.

I wondering if I could get the source of the KDEPIM from Fedora 14 and compile on Fedora 16 if this would work.

Since there is a kmail folder and a kmail2 folder KDE might consider creating the old version of kmail for compatibility, and a new version that you would add enhancements. The problem with the database is that you are locked into kmail for life. Since I can't see any other email program writing an import function for a KDE database. In my humble option, all email programs should go to a standard email format so as to allow users to switch to a different program easily. kmail has gone in the opposite direction.

This happens to me every time I restore from backup.

What you have to do, is at the root of the folder structure, for example, mine is Local Folders, right click and select Update folder and its subfolders.

Once I do this, then all my mail becomes visible again.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply Joe.

I tried your suggestion, but it didn't help in my case.

Do you have any meaningful errors in ~/.xsession-errors?

Thanks for your reply einar. There are a lot of messages in .xsession_errors. Tonight I'm going to delete all messages and then run the conversion again. I'll post my findings.

This may help others having problems. You may try this workaround.
I installed vmplayer (vmware) (free)
I installed Fedora 14 using vmplayer.
I moved all my .kde files across to vm (Fedora 14) environment.
Everything works great Kmail and Kaddressbook.
This of course is a resource hog, but hey, I have working email again.

This is a temporary workaround until Kmail2 can email again.

Hope this helps.

Hello einar,

I deleted all messages from .xsession-errors and then ran the conversion again. There wasn't a single error or message in .xsession-errors. Were do we go from here?

I'm going to look at compiling a 4.6 version of KDE and see if I can get it installed on Fedora 16. If that fails, I'll look at porting my email to a different program.

The Kmail/KDEPIM folks seem to have a different view of progress. The unfortunate thing here is that a distribution upgrade dramatically breaks such a very essential tool. Unacceptable in my view. Obviously you're frustrated as am I for the same reasons. So should the folks at Fedora be as upset and accountable for this. I've also switched to TB, if only to allow me to upgrade to Fedora 16 w/o loosing my email. Anyway, if interested, here's my rant on the current KDEPIM issue.

ddan, since you didn't lost the files, you can always add an akonadi resource to this folder ;). The only thing you do next is just to refresh the folders

MadAGu thanks for your reply.

Could you provide some more details on what I have to do?

I did do a Update folder and subfolders, but nothing seemed to happen.
Is this what you mean by refresh folders?

I haven't tried adding akonadi resource to a folder. What folder kmail2 folder? kmail folder? What command or screen do i use to add the akonadi resource?

If you have a solution, I'm sure many people would be interested.
