@dargaud: As I stated previously, based on the logs you have provided - your Nepomuk setup likely is either broken or otherwise not functioning. This is why Search does not work for you.
Also, have you checked the two bug reports I posted links to earlier in this thread? https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=279260 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=285676

Just wanted to say that my original problem which started the thread has been solved by updating to 4.8 RC1. It may be a little slow ob big folders, but it works.

The mess just gets bigger - always. Obviously, there is a bug with this: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=288364 Now I read some people with 4.7.4 have resolved this issue with it, others say the contrary. I am not computer savvy enough to dare to install 4.8 I am a simple user who expects that I am not used as a guinea pig, I have 4.7.3 and no access to emails anymore - again - and am mad as hell. Ubuntu 11.10 64 with Kmail 4.7.3 |

@bcooksley: OK, I'll see what I can get out of those posts when I go back to work next week, which is where my current worse kmail is. As for the home PC, kmail seems to work OK now after a complete system reinstall, except for the search.
Nepomuk is active and I don't know what else to check. If I turn it off, nothing changes (still no folder choice in the search window). Even when turned off, I still have a akonadi_nepomuk_email_feeder process running. It restarts if killed off. |

From what I can see in my KDE Trunk installation, you might need to file a bug report to request Folder selection in the search dialog.

Same problem here, "receiving folder contents" stalling forever, since KUbuntu oneiric's online update a few days ago.
However, I noticed that restarting KDE solves the problem (until next hangup). Nepomuk processes working like expected. No IMAP, only POP3 and local folders. In the hope that helps. Eric |

My thoughts exactly. After 10+ years using KDE/Kmail, for the first time I'm seriously considering migrating to Claws Mail. I upgraded to Fedora 16 on 2 workstations and am not able to access mail on neither because of these bugs. I was only rescued from being completely cut-off because I postponed the upgrade on my notebook, which still has F15 with Kmail 1 installed. On my workstations, one was an upgrade from F15 but on the other I did a fresh instalation, but the problem is the same on both. In the good ole times of the late Red Hat and the first Fedora distributions, I used to follow up on distribution lists, howtos, etc., in order to solve the bugs, just for the fun of it and because I wanted to learn something and had some time to spare. Now, I'm no longer willing to keep on doing that and neither have the time for it. So, please, find a solution ASAP and post it in this topic, because I'm hanging from a thread here. |

I believe bug #285676 to be a duplicate of #279260.
Can you please try the following procedure to see if that is the case? (Adapted from bug report) First, you *must* take a full backup of ~/.local/share prior to commencing this procedure, as if followed incorrectly it could lead to data loss. Install, then start Akonadi Console prior to KMail developing this issue. It should be started in a terminal so the output can be captured. Switch to the Browser tab in it, then use the tree of folders to select the folder which triggers the issue. At this point it should freeze up like KMail does. If you now examine the terminal output of Akonadi Console, you should see something like this:
Where 'item 63748 "{869a924c-06ab-4538-97df-bbd3cffb991b}"' will differ. In this case, the "{869a924c-06ab-4538-97df-bbd3cffb991b}" is the important part. You should now shutdown Akonadi and run the following, replacing "{869a924c-06ab-4538-97df-bbd3cffb991b}" with what you got.
Then move the file it found someplace else (or delete it) and start Akonadi up. Repeat this procedure until you can enter the folder without problems.

Hello bcooksley,
I followed your instructions. When I enter in KMail a mail folder that would be "received" forever, akonadiconsole does not freeze. It only displays "Synchronizing the email folder <Foldername> (0%)" in the Mail resource. No text output either. Best, |

Odd. Is nothing output on the console?
What if you open "kdebugdialog" and enable all areas?

@markum: I can confirm all of this. Running 3 working 4.7.3 with minor issues but having no access for days now on one computer (the 3 working have at most 1 GB of data, the 1 not working is much larger at ca 10 GB of data).
But maybe we all got this wrong, Kmail is not an email program period (from thedilfridge blog): "Ormaaj said... Kmail is an email program? I assumed it was a graphical tool for displaying all of the possible Akonadi error messages depending on which button you push. If it could also send email that would be a nice additional feature. September 26, 2011 8:11 AM" Sorry, but after a first lough it's tough not to get cynical about Kdepim, and displaying proper error messages is not working either now... |

> Odd. Is nothing output on the console?
Nothing. > What if you open "kdebugdialog" and enable all areas? I am sorry. I am using kmail for my everyday work, and I had to find a working solution. So I moved to kmail 4.8 - it's not perfect, it is slow and crashes at closing, but now at least I can read my email without logging in and out all the time. So I am afraid I would not be able to help you further with debugging. Sorry. Éric |

As a matter of fact, KMail 1.48 still hangs all the time. The only difference is it does not display any message when doing so.
I have enabled all fields in kdebugdialog. Unfortunately it seems that the relevant information is missing. All you can do at this point is comment on the bug report with your variation of the issue.

Hi bcooksley,
I don't know whether it's good or bad news, but I have upgraded to kmail 4.8 rc2 (it was rc1 before) and more recent akonadi and all, and this time the hanging problems seems to have disappeared for good. Pfew, it was driving me nuts... Of course this does not solve it for people running kmail 4.7. |
