[preamble] I do understand mine is a weird question[/preamble]
I need to configure a number of desktop PCs with KDE v4.8.0 and need to disable as much completely as possible any PIM and Kontact related part of KDE. I'm running Kubuntu 11.10 and have managed to completely disable any nepomuk and akonadi stuff. Apart of the akonaditray. At the moment the user can still start all that stuff and I'd like to have it removed. Is there a way to have those parts "uninstalled" from KDE? Thanks in advance. |

how do the users "start all that stuff" if it's been disabled?

It all depends on your distro and how heavily they patch vanilla packages. I suggest you log onto kubuntuforums.net where you will find plenty of people who know how kubuntu has packaged KDE.
Not trying to fob you off, but I reckon you'll get a better/speedier response over there.

They re-enable it so at the next login that stuff starts again.

My point is: can KDE live without that stuff?

... and how to avoid akonaditray to be started ad every login?
This should not be distribution specific!

there's some discussions on the Kubuntu forums about this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... omments/11 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... omments/12 On my system akonaditray does not start and I've not done anything to keep it from starting though akonadiserver and things are running |

The first one works. I already have a way to stop the other stuff, as I said in the very first post.

You may wish to experiment with Immutable options - which is part of KDE's Kiosk framework support.

Immutable options ... Kiosk ... I cannot find these in (K)ubuntu. I'll look deeper later though ...

There are articles on KDE Techbase regarding how to configure Kiosk Immutable settings. You will need to use a text editor however to do it.

Sorry but both workarounds are quite silly (and I'd really like to know who added http://userbase.kde.org/Akonadi#Disabli ... _subsystem) The first one removes the Exec line which will indeed prevent akonaditray from starting *forever* and that will likely be reverted when your distribution upgrades the kdepim-runtime packages. Note that this is a distribution issue. akonaditray doesn't start by default. The second workaround (and what the userpage link suggests) is even worse. What 'StartServer=false' does is not what is written. Akonadi still *tries* to start. This setting just changes how. With StartServer=true, the Akonadi server starts its own database instance. With StartServer=false, it tries to use the system one (or at least, the one that is configured). Any application that uses the kdepimlibs api will also trigger failed startup attempts (examples: calligra, kopete, konversation, tellico and many more).

Hi
one might go to the menu editor and remove Akonaditry from the menu. Akonaditray only appears in the panel when one invokes it from the menu. One could also remove it from the menu editor. The users would have to know how to find it, which, for your information, is in usr/bin. Also, Akonadi does not "have to run" at all. Depending on what distro one is using, if there is a preferences, or through Akonaditray, one can remove all of the "resources" by just deleting them. They can be added back later. And in "preferences" one can also disable all of the Akonadi/strigi indexing by just unticking them. And, then also, just remove that part of preferences from the menu, if the user does not see them then they cannot be enabled. Some menu editors will allow one to fine tune from a GUI, other distros will have to have the items removed from a "script" buried somewhere, and as posted above, the best place to find this out would be from the distro devs themselves. woodsmoke |

Did somebody try this solution which should be straight ?

This solution will be overwritten by your package manager as updates and upgrades are applied.
Further, it will not prevent KDE components from attempting to contact Nepomuk or loading Nepomuk functionality they support.
