KRemoteControl not working

Thu Aug 29, 2013 8:21 pm
HP Pavilion dv4 1125nr - Remote RC1762302/00 (HP: HSTNN-PRO7) - Kubuntu 12.04 - KDE 4.8.5

KRemoteControl is not working. It autostarts fine, its icon is in the System Tray, it's enabled for Amarok, but nothing happens when I press a key on the remote. I'd like to use the remote only in Amarok and VLC. I'd appreciate any help.

Is lircd installed, and able to receive commands from your remote control?

Lircd is installed (lircd: there seems to already be a lircd process with pid 1029), but I'm not sure if it's able to receive commands from the remote. The remote icon is on the system tray, and seems enabled (there's no "X" above it). I've downloaded and installed 4 configuration files compatible with my remote, but none works. Besides, and following the instructions on the manuals, I've created 4 remotes in System Settings, each one with its "Amarok" mode; when I click "Try" on the configuration dialog, Amarok responds fine to the sent command. I've installed a new battery but for no avail.

Thanks for your reply.

Can you try to use the LIRC utilities to configure your remote control, to see if anything is being registered?
An article covering some of the steps involved is here - http://www.g-loaded.eu/2006/01/10/how-t ... -use-lirc/
You should skip to the "irrecord" phase of that article.

According to the instructions you've recommended me to read, in the section Applications and LIRC Support, there should be either a lircrc file in /etc or a .lircrc in my home directory, but none exists. Any clue?

Thanks for your reply.

Was the "irrecord" phase successful in detecting commands from your remote control?
Also, what does the system tray icon for KRemoteControl look like? Does it have a red cross through it?

According to your instructions, I skipped the "irrecord" phase. I'll try it later and keep you informed. Regarding the system tray icon, it was fine - no red cross - until yesterday. . Today the icon is hidden and with a red cross over it.

Thanks for you reply.

Hi!

When I run "irrecord" I get the following message:

(...)
irrecord - application for recording IR-codes for usage with lirc

Copyright (C) 1998,1999 Christoph Bartelmus(lirc@bartelmus.de)

irrecord: could not get file information for /dev/lirc
irrecord: default_init(): No such file or directory
irrecord: could not init hardware (lircd running ? --> close it, check permissions)
(...)

The system tray icon has returned without the red "X", but remote isn't working at all.

Thanks for your attention.

Hmm. Before trying to run the irrecord tests, can you close KRemoteControl please? I suspect it may be conflicting.
Also, could you post a screenshot of the main KRemoteControl configuration?

Even with KRemoteControl closed "irrecord" returns the same "error" message. How do I post (or attach) a screenshot here? I'm not familiar with html tags...

Thanks for your attention.

I notice that you have configured "modes" for the remotes. Have you tried configuring general actions instead?

Now I have. Please see the image below:

Image

1. Selected a remote and added an action;
2. Selected the "DVD" button;
3. Selected the "run command" action;
4. Typed "amarok" in the QString "value" field.

When I hit the "Try" button on the Control Module dialog, Amarok starts fine. However, when I press "DVD"on the remote, nothing happens (with any of the 4 configured remotes). This morning the KRemoteControl icon didn't appear in the System Tray when I booted the laptop; instead, it's in the "hidden icons" window with a red "X" over it.

Thanks for you help.

The "red X" in this case means KRemoteControl was not able to access your laptop's IR sensor.
I'm rather confused as to why pressing the button wouldn't work.

When adding your remote, is it able to detect keypresses then, or are you selecting a pre-existing make/model profile?
