I'm running Mint 16 and no matter what Simon just won't connect. I set it up by watching the video and all went fine with the complete setup. I installed all of the various scenarios and the Firefox addon. Is it a problem with Mint?

Can you tell me what happens if you try to connect?
Could you also please verify, with a task manager of your choice, that the process "simond" is running when you try to connect? Best regards, Peter |

First of all. Thank you Peter for the comeback.
When I try to connect I get a Connection error: Connection refused. With the simond I get: Could not connect to database. I was hoping that I could upload the images here. but I can't. Sorry... I hope that's what you wanted. Dan |

Yeah, the server component fails to start because it can't connect to it's user database. You are likely missing the sqlite plugin for qt. Could you please verify that you installed a package called something like libqt4-sql-sqlite?

Thanks Peter. I saw you on here and installed libqt4-sql-sqlite. I'll try it now.
Thanks That did it! Thank you sir and I'll see if the rest of it's working. |

It keeps deactivating. Also does it need to learn my voice?
Thanks again |

Please refer to the manual that ships with Simon for usage instructions.

Hi again Peter. I'm getting errors. It looks like some of the directories are not there.
Anyway to fix it? Thanks Dan |

Well, do the stated files exist?
Have you listened to your samples in Simon? (In the main window > Manage training data) Best regards, Peter |

Howdy Peter.
I give up on this. First of all I have tried over and over to extract and install the tar. No go. I can't figure out how to do that. The way I've had to install is with synaptic. It installs nicely that way, but doesn't get all of the libs and the extras. It seems that all is working well until I run it. I've retrained everything over and over, but nothing comes up as far as the Show Places, Start Browser... etc..., but when I click on the triggers they come up. There has to be something wrong somewhere. I have uninstalled it again and installed it. Funny all of my data (voice) is still there. It may uninstall Simon, but there's alot of leftovers. How do I get rid of the leftovers? I'd really like to get it going, but so far I'm stuck. Is there anything else that you can think of that I may be missing? I even tried the simon_0.3.0-1ubuntu3_amd64.deb. No go with that either. Is there ever going to be an updated ppa. Two years ago you said there would be. Thanks Dan p. |

There are installation instructions for compiling from source on the wiki. If you are having problems for that, feel free to open another topic, and I will address it there.
If you install over Synaptics, you get the packages from your distribution. Which of the optional features they package is a decision taken by the packagers - not me. If you disagree with their choice, I would recommend you bring it up with them (I think Debian packages contain contact information - I suggest you check the package info in Synaptics). As to how you do not only uninstall the Simon software but also remove user data, I sadly also have to direct you to the documentation of your package manager as this is a concern of the package, not the software itself. For debian based system I think the right command is “apt-get purge simon” but I am honestly not sure. If you want to do it manually, we do in fact have a small bash script for this purpose. It’s called “clearsimonconfiguration.sh” and it should be in the script/ folder of the downloaded source archive. As for troubleshooting the problem regarding the recognition, I would still need answers to the questions I asked in my last post here - it’s really crucial to get to the bottom of this. I will no longer provide packages to Simon in any PPA, as there are now upstream packages. Best regards, Peter |

To answer your question with regarding the recognition. After going through each word, the training worked, but as far as making the actual gui come up. It wasn't. As I said, I could click the trigger and it would bring the gui up. Over the weekend I updated my system to Mint 17, so anything that was here is gone. I'm not good at all with executing scripts. I didn't have to do it with Windows. In the doc there is no clear way of installing Simon. No install readme at all. You have "Please compile Simon with the provided build.sh script." I tried the "build_ubuntu.sh" by bringing the treminal up and typed "build_ubuntu.sh". That did nothing but erred out if I remember right. Bottom line. It didn't work, because I don't know how to do it. I know you are not there to teach how to run scripts, but it's not just me you'd be helping. Alot of people are going to read this that are in the same boat as I that could use the help. What I am asking is how do I run the install please for Mint/Ubuntu?
Thanks Dan |

Compiling a piece of software is by definition never a user friendly undertaking. It is not meant to be done by users but by developers. It's completely "normal" and understandable that you don't know how to do it - you should not and do not need to know that.
Providing detailed instructions for compiling a software as complex as Simon from source for people without basic knowledge of shell navigation is simply beyond the scope. Because of the infinite amount of problems, multiplied by an almost equally infinite number of distributions, these instructions would inevitably end up being horrendously long (making them useless) or simply a list of instructions which that are to be followed blindly (making them dangerous) - neither of which I consider favourable. This whole discussion, though, is completely beside the point. End users should use packages provided by their distribution. It's what you always did on Windows too. Use the packages for Linux Mint. If they don't have any, request some. If they are insufficient or broken, file a bug. Thank you for your understanding. Best regards, Peter |

I knew I could get it if I stuck with it. I got it going through the Linux Mint Package Manager. It looks like you, or someone there had something to do with it. All of the header is the same as the simon org site. It came right up.
Thank you for your work. Dan |
