Hi everybody,
is it possible, to start simond from the console for use as a Server over the network? Till now, I can run it using ksimond, and connect to the running demon over the network. But when I run simond from console, it just opens the port 4444 for users on localhost. I'm using simon 0.3.0 and am stuck to that version for reasons concerning my project. Any hints would be appreciated. Best regards thomas |

Thanks for your reply, but that's not, what I'm looking for. I managed the start of simond from ksimond with that option successfully. My aim is, to get a simond running from a startscript on the server without restriction of access to localhost. When I start simond from a console, the restriction to localhost is given again, as nmap from a client machine tells me. Even if I start simond as the user who can start it from ksimond in a running x-environment without that restriction, access is only given to localhost. As we plan to use simon in a client-server environment, it's not a really good option to always have to use a x-environment to start the server... Hope I stated my aim a bit clearer now Best regards and thanks in advance Thomas |

My guess is that simond supports arguments which control how it is accessed. Perhaps the output of "simond --help" can help here?
It may also help to look at the exact command KDE uses to start simond to see if replicating that helps.

Hi again,
unfortunately simond tells much. There's no manpage. Of course I have tried to get it to speak to me, by using various options in terminal, but none of them works. So, how can I access the information on how KDE starts simond, when I start it from the startpanel? Best Regards Thomas |

Hi!
The daemon should apply the same options when started through ksimond and when started standalone (ksimond just starts simond separately internally). There are no command line options. Just the configuration file ~/.kde/share/config/simondrc. Make sure that it contains BindTo=false in the Network section:

Ok,
obviously the problem was in front of the computer... Must have tested with the wrong user. It works perfectly. Thanks a lot Thomas |
