Hi all,

A couple of weeks ago I downloaded the Marble world map program. I haven't used the program other than to do an initial boot after downloading the program. During that one use I recall selecting (without understanding they must have been large downloads) a couple of optional maps, such as for Dione, one of the moons of Saturn.

A couple of days afterward, HughesNet reduced my download speed, notifying me I was in violation of their fair use policy for exceeding my download allowance. I called HughesNet and complained, because I hadn't done any downloads and have Windows Update, Adobe and Flash, and other such programs all set to manual update, which I do late at night when I get a few hours of unlimited bandwidth. I noticed at the time the Dione download in Firefox, which I realized must be an automatic update/download, but it said "failed" and didn't provide a file size, so I figured Marble couldn't be the problem-- Hughesnet said the download violation was almost 700MB. I uninstalled the program, figuring the problem was solved. Not.

I've now been cut off by HughesNet 3 times. Each time the same "failed" download with no file size appears in Firefox. There are no other downloads listed, other than news stories and articles which are very small, tens of kilobytes.

I then looked through the forum posts, and done a Google search on Marble, KDE, automatic downloads, but didn't see anything relevant. I checked Programs in Control Panel, and neither KDE nor Marble was present. Then I searched the Registry for marble and KDE, but there are no relevant entries. I'm stumped. But something on my computer is automatically downloading the following (I tried to copy a screenshot, but this forum wouldn't allow it) from Firefox's Downloads page:

saturn-dione-marblemap.zip
Failed --- kde.org ---- 12:21 PM

Bottom line: I've got a ghost in the machine which is in the background automatically trying to download huge amounts of data. Whether it's one big file, or a series of failed attempts at downloading the same file, I have no idea. But it's happening.

Can anyone diagnose the problem and point me to a solution?

Thanks,

Steve

Registry? Doesn't exist in Linux ;)

This sounds like Firefox doing stuff to me, rather than marble. As an extreme measure, you could try using a different browser for a while?
Also try to look in firefox' download window if you can maybe manually cancel the download or so.

Greetings!

I'm working on the KDevelop IDE.

I'm assuming you're running Windows?

If so, please check for any "marble.exe" processes running in the background in Task Manager. You'll need to use the "Processes" tab for this unless you're running Windows 8.

The Saturn Dione map amounts to 42 MB. Other maps are of comparable size or usually even smaller. Additional map data is only downloaded while interacting with Marble and is neglectable in terms of size. The "Download Region feature is also limited to a certain amount of tiles that get downloaded - this precaution was established to fulfill the OSM terms of use. I'm quite sure that your issue has nothing to do with Marble. Have you checked for viruses, spyware etc.?
