Trying to make this post as brief as possible since in reality it is kind of a minor issue which seems to be isolated to me....
After doing two linux installations and one Windows installation, I find that when I click on a "place marker" the "Info Panels" are not the same. Two of the three give me a "two tabbed" popup with one tab allowing me to see wiki information. The third does not have any tabs, it just shows long/lat type info and no wiki info. If it was the two linux machines that were the same, I probably wouldn't be posting this. Unfortunately this is not the case. It is also unfortunate that I'm not a linux guru. With my limited abilities, I've been able to determine: 1. Both (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS) machines have the latest kernel, are as updated as "Update Manager" says they can be, and both use the same repositories. 2. Both Marble installs were done through "Ubuntu Software Center" 3. That said, one machine (the one that has the wiki tab) gets ver 4.8.5 as the "default install" and the other gets ver 4.13. Obviously, I'm working with two 12.04 installations that aren't as "identical" as I thought, but my attempt to use Synaptic to downgrade/force install 4.8.5 onto the problem machine ended with Marble barely working at all. So, does anyone also have this "problem" with 4.13 or, have any thoughts on what I can try to do in order to get the wiki tab?? Thanks in advance. EDIT: 6/3/14 - It appears that Krita is installed on the computer in question and not the other two. Currently investigating whether this is the cause. |

Just thought I'd post that the problem seems to be a) SLIGHTY better understood by me, and b) SEEMS to be fixed.
While most people with half a brain will already know (or be able to guess) what the problem was, this post is in case there are more people like me. Apparently the problem was that Marble was using kubuntu-ppa/backports, and the fact that the computer had Krita installed "messed things up". To "fix", I did the following. Whether or not it was proper or necessary, I'll leave to others to ddecide. 1) Used Synaptic to completely remove the following: gpsd (3.4-2ubuntu0.1) libastro1 (4:4.13.0-0ubuntu1~ubuntu12.04~ppa1) libgps20 (3.4-2ubuntu0.1) libmarblewidget18 (4:4.13.0-0ubuntu1~ubuntu12.04~ppa1) libqextserialport1 (1.2.0~rc1-2~ubuntu12.04~ppa2) libqtlocation1 (1.2.0-1ubuntu2) libquazip0 (0.5.1-2~ubuntu12.04~ppa1) libshp1 (1.2.10-5) libwlocate0 (0.0git20130108-0ubuntu1~ubuntu12.04.1~ppa1) marble (4:4.13.0-0ubuntu1~ubuntu12.04~ppa1) marble-plugins (4:4.13.0-0ubuntu1~ubuntu12.04~ppa1) 2) I allowed marble-data to remain because synaptic siad removing it would also remove Calligra and Krita - which I didn't want to do. 3) Using Nautilus I deleted everything I could find that referred to Marble, which I believe was just the /home/bryan/.kde/share/config/marblerc file and (with permission) the /usr/share/kde4/apps/marble folder. 4) Rebooted 5) Disabled kubuntu-ppa from sources, and installed Marble using software center. 6) Started Marble and received multiple "position marker cursor" errors and basically a non-working program with none of the default maps and just a blank version of a map I had downloaded days ago. 7) Decided to use Synaptic to downgrade marble-data:i386 (4.13.0-0ubuntu1~ubuntu12.04~ppa1 to 4.8.5-0ubuntu0.2) 8) Rebooted, marble worked fine ..... including wikipages. 9) Started Krita and had no menu bar. 10) Deleted kritarc file in /home/bryan/.kde/share/config. Restarted Krita and all seems good. Restarted Marble - still good too. Hope this perhaps helps someone, any guru's want to tell me what i should have done - feel free. |

Spoke too soon. It appears that Krita still has problems. - It seems to work fine if used once per session, but the menubar disappears if it is stopped and then restarted. Clicking on where it "should be" works (ie menus are displayed if mouse is in the correct location) but a reboot is required if I want it displayed again. Off to browse the krita forum and google the issue. |

The plot thickens.... issue seems to be Unity-2d desktop related.
Logging using Ubuntu (aka Unity3D), Gnome Classic, Gnome-no effects, or Cinnamon, the problem can not be duplicated. |

Does this issue still concern Marble, or is it now with Krita?
If it is with Krita, I suspect you're running into conflicts between the OS X style menu which Unity has implemented and how KDE applications work...

Due to the fact that my previous posts show that I don't really know what I'm doing, I hesitate to answer this. However, I will try my best....... To the best of my knowledge if one installs Marble (1.7.97) and Krita (2.8.2) on the same (gnome) machine the "missing wiki tab" problem in marble still exists. I believe this has something to do with Marble depending libmarblewidget18 and Krita depending libmarblewidget13 - but this is just a guess. As for Krita having the "disappearing menu" issue after downgrading Marble to 1.3.4, that is even more of a mystery to me. The only thing I know for certain is that prior to installing Marble I did not have this problem with Krita using any desktop environment or any windows manager. Beyond that, all I can do is report my findings: 1) Of the three DE's I tried, when using compiz as the WM the problem did not occur. 2) Of my two Metacity options (gnome-no effects and Unity-2d) the problem only occurs when using Unity-2d......so,yes, in a way it is an issue with the global menu of Unity, but only with a metacity/unity combination. The bottom line at this point is (unless someone else comes up with a solution) I'll be running gnome (no effects) until I can get a graphics card that can handle compiz better than my on board graphics. |

That library is rather crucial to the operation of Marble - it can't run without it. It is also extremely odd that you would have two packages from the same repository dragging in such radically different versions. Do you have 3rd party repositories enabled on your system?
In regards to the global menu feature offered by Unity: to remove it (to ensure it is not the cause) please run the following and then logout and back in again.

Actually, after I wrote my last post I decided to try something similar, but I did not include indicator-appmenu. I only did -
Regardless, this did eliminate the Unity/disappearing menu problem and I'm willing to call my Krita problem "solved".. As for enabling 3rd party repositories, that is the crux of my original problem....... In order for the "Places Info" in Marble to display a wiki option (while still having Krita 2.8.2 from ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu) I've had to disable the kubuntu-backports in order to stop Marble from getting upgraded and then "breaking".. EDIT: Yes, in case you are wondering, I am aware that by disabling the kubuntu-backports I will no longer be getting updates to Krita, but at this point I see no other option. |

If the Backports PPA is missing the Wikipedia information panel, then I suggest you file an issue with the maintainers of that PPA so they can correct it. At the moment you have a mixture of software versions on your system which could be incompatible (sudden crashes, etc).
