Ellipsoid model of the Earth

Tue Jul 07, 2015 2:18 pm
Hi,

I have understood that the whole Marble project is based on the spherical model of the Earth.
We all know that the ellipsoid model is closer of the real Earth than the spherical one. Do you have any idea about the work I would have to provide to implement the notion of ellipsoid (WGS84 for instance) into Marble ?

Thanks a lot

Not sure what you mean exactly.
We are assuming that the data imported is WGS84.
However visually we don't map the WGS84 data model onto an ellipsoid but onto a sphere instead.
Do you run into any actual problems with that approach? :-)

How can you map a data model based on an ellipsoid onto a sphere ?

There must be some differences between the point seen on a virtual map and the point seen on Marble, right ?

Do you mean that Marble uses some king of conversion functions between the data received in WGS84 and the data visualized onto a sphere ?
