Couple Marble Questions

Thu Oct 22, 2009 12:43 am
Who maintains the Atlas map, its not one that can be added/removed from the file menu so it doesn't have the description for it. Can data be added to it, I see some text files in the source with city names/locations.

Is there an interface to make calls to Marble from another app? I want to be able to look up a city name closest to a set of coordinates.

You may find Marble's mailing list ( marble-devel@kde.org ) to be able to assist you with these.

I don't understand what you mean here. What are you trying to accomplish?

Yes, you can add data either by changing the source files or you can just load a KML file into the Marble application.

That's a feature that Marble doesn't have yet. It would be nice if somebody could create a MarbleRunner that would accomplish this via Geonames.org-services:

If you open Marble then on the left is a tab called themes, some examples are openstreetmap, cyclemap, etc and one is called atlas. Now if you go to file/maps there are a bunch that can be installed/uninstalled and each has a description of what it is and people that maintain it but the atlas isn't listed and therefore no description of who maintains that map. I zoom in on that atlas and see quite a few cities but see some missing and am wondering if those can be added.

Can I give a simple text file (i suppose I could find some tool/script to convert to kml) like this http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks/gpsinf ... fault.aspx which has a simple list of names/locations.

My issue with using an online service like geonames.org is its too specific.

What I'm doing is geotagging pictures to start with, but then for searching and indexing thats too detailed so I'm going to have a script look at the picture gps location, call an app like marble and return the nearest town/city/park name. So for example Columbus OH is 82° 58' 54"W, 39° 58' 54"N according to marble but everything close could be from 81-83° 58' 54"W, 38-40° 58' 54"N etc so if I have a picture at 81° 59' 54"W, 39° 53' 54"N it will just return Columbus OH. My script will then put Columbus OH in the EXIF description field of the pictures. That way I search for everything containing "Columbus OH". Its a little more complicated that that, I'm reading the existing description field and appending ", Columbus OH" to it so I can have additional tags in there as well. Basically automating some tagging. I have the gpstagging pretty much automated, plug in the gps and a script copies all its logs to a designated place, their name is data coded. Then plug in the camera and a script copies all the pictures, reads the dates and calls the script from http://sourceforge.net/projects/gps2photo/ looking for a gps log from those dates which then adds the gps data to the pictures. So this city/town/place name is the next step putting some simple location descriptions on.
