I am new to this forum but long time user and fan of kdevelop. Many thanks for all the good work!
I just started using the appimage flavor and find that it uses gnomish icons in the toolbar etc.
Is there a way to make it use the native theme on my desktop (oxygen/breeze etc.) ?

Not straightforwardly.

A key feature of AppImages is that they bundle nearly all their resources (libraries, styles and in this case icons) in the archive rather than relying on anything provided by the system.

The advantage is that you can install them nearly anywhere without worrying about dependencies; the corresponding downside is that the style, icons and other platform settings won't match.

It's possible to open up the AppImage with Ark or your preferred archiving tool and edit the contained icons and config files, but it may be easier to just build a native copy of KDevelop.

BTW the native ubuntu build of Kdevelop is still at version 5.2.1.
Is that much lag going be the norm moving forward ?

I guess I will move to building kdevelop from sources myself.

FWIW, there is no such thing as a "native" icon theme on a Linux desktop (or maybe I should say all icon themes are native)

There's something I don't understand here. Even if the AI has embedded copies of everything it needs it should still read the user's ~/.config/kdeglobals file as well as all the "data" stuff under ~/.local/share, no?

If so there is really only a single reason why the AI could not be using the user selected theme the icon loader (QIconTheme) isn't looking in the standard icon theme locations, possibly because it's configured to use a theme included in the appimage. But I doubt that the KDevelop appimage would ship with a Gnome icon theme...

I haven't tried the AI build since 5.2.0 and I seem to remember that back then I could hardly tell that and my builds apart (meaning they used the same style).

As a maintainer of KF5 packaging I know how much work it is to keep up with the release schedule. So depending on how recent your Ubuntu version is then yes, that kind of lag is to be expected. You could see if the Neon packages are available for your Ubuntu version.
