Hello,
I don't see anything in the preferences to set different settings depending on the language or the project.
For example, in the python project I'm working on, the tabulation is 4 spaces while the lua project I have uses 2 spaces. Is there a way to set such things automatically?

Yes, this can easily be set up by using Kate's Modelines feature. Look in Settings -> Editor -> Open/Save -> Modes&Filetypes under Variables.
