did you login as root? or did you su to root in the Konsole before running Konqueror?

I started up the OS as a user, then after that I opened Konsole, as that user, then I did the su - to switch to root in Konsole.

to run gui apps as root you should call the app differently, with a "kdesu" prefixing the command
if you run konqueror as you does it work correctly |

Ok just tried that too, got the same thing:
kdesu konqueror kbuildsycoca running... DCOP Cleaning up dead connections. Then that window popped up again. So I still can not get it to start up. |

if you open Konqueror as you, not root, does it start

No it does not start.
Whether I try to open it as a user, or as root, it does not start. |

run kdebugdialog -> deslect all -> search "konqueror" -> select konqueror -> ok
delete the file ~/.xsession-errors then run konqueror as you, after it crashes in Konsole run

Also, how do I find the /.xsession-errors file?

I ran: locate xsessions-errors and could not find it...
I did however run kdebugdialog as user not root, and found konqueror though, found it and selected it and clicked ok...

it should be in your home folder, if not there then it will be created - locate may not index your home directory
run as you |

Oh WOW!
It opened up! Actually I am not sure but when I click the start button in lower left hand corner of kde, the first application showing is home, and when I click home, konqueror actually opened right up! Doesnt konqueror show as konqueror in the file list when clicking the start button? Or is is supposed to show as home? Or maybe this just fixed the problem? Gosh do I feel dumb - it was there all along - I was confused by the splash screen that came up but the window that originally opened up was konqueror after all. I guess I need more coffee! |

Well, while I am on the subject, it's been a long time since i used konqueror, what is the syntax in the address bar to get an sftp connection to a remote server?
If I type in fish://username@www.mysite.com, is this automatically a port 22 ssh connection? |

Konqueror has multiple profiles available (filemanagement webbrowsing kde_devel midnightcommander tabbedbrowsing), the home entry in Kmenu is opening the filemanagement profile, it could be that the Konqueror icon you click in Kmenu is using the webbrowsing profile and there is something amiss in that profile
