is systemsettings -> startup & shutdown -> autostart not what you're looking for? if so in what regard

No. Nautilus is started at system startup but I can't see it in systemsettings -> startup & shutdown -> autostart list. I think it's started by kdeinit4.

This is likely an application which was saved as part of the session on logout, and thus started on login. If you wish, you can disable this behaviour in System Settings.

Open System Settings > Startup & Shutdown > Session Management.

You could also exclude just Nautilus from this behaviour, by adding "nautilus" into "Applications to be excluded from sessions".

I've excluded it. But it still starts.

I assume you used to have a GNOME system and are now using KDE?
In that case look for this file:
Code: Select all
/etc/xdg/autostart/nautilus-autostart.desktop

If it is there removing it should stop Nautilus from starting every time.
WARNING!
This WILL break some functionallity of your GNOME system (desktop icons)

An alternative solution (if you want to avoid problems when you decide to start GNOME session for some reason):

1) Create a file named gnomeappsrc in <global_kde_config_dir>/share/config (<global_kde_config_dir> is usually /etc/kde4) with the following content (under root):

Code: Select all
[Autostart]
Nautilus=false

2) Add the following line to /etc/xdg/autostart/nautilus-autostart.desktop (again, under root):

Code: Select all
X-KDE-autostart-condition=gnomeappsrc:Autostart:Nautilus:true

3) Restart KDE session

That way the desktop icons will work in GNOME, but Nautilus won't start in KDE. Moreover, you can always change Nautilus parameter in gnomeappsrc to true if you want to!
