I am running openSuSE 12.1/KDE 4.8.2.
kmozillahelper is installed from the 0.6.3-6.1.2 mozilla-KDE-integration repo. In Firefox(or Thunderbird), selecting File-Open File from the toolbar opens a Dolphin like dialog window. In that dialog window, upper right corner, an Options icon opens a sub-menu, one item of which is a Show Bookmarks item. When selected, a Bookmarks icon appear on the file-open dialog window, selecting it opens a bookmark dialog box. I can add/manage bookmarks here. I believe this sub-dialog is managed by keditbookmarks (ver 4.8.2-296.1 installed) Q1: I would like the bookmarks icon on the Open File dialog to be ON by default. Can this be configured? Q2: Where is the bookmark list contents managed her stored on my system? It is persistent (across reboots) and appears in both Firefox and Thunderbird. Thanks for any hints |

I'll add that I now see that LibreOffice (release 3.4.5) on openSuSE 12.1 also uses this Open_File Dialog when one selects Insert-Picture-from File.
The Bookmark icon not enabled by default, but when active, opens the same bookmark lists that I am using in Mozilla apps. |

I will assume by Bookmarks, you mean the area on the left of the File browser, labeled "Places".
Shortcuts/Links created here can be shared across all KDE applications. The shortcuts are stored in standard XBEL format at ~/.kde4/share/apps/kfileplaces/bookmarks.xml If you edit the entries in that list by right clicking on them, you can either restrict them to Mozilla applications, or permit all KDE applications to use them.

Thanks, but that is not what I had in mind.
I could use Places, but it seems by default to be the rather long default Dolphin Places. Look at this screenshot: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/50261731/Selection_041.png This is from a Thunderbird session, Inserting an image - the Open_File dialog. I first select the Option "wrench" icon and there Select Show Bookmarks. That places the Bookmarks star icon on the toolbar. Selecting that brings up a bookmark list managed by keditbookmark. Sorry, I can't get a screenshot with the bookmarkdialog open. What I want is the star icon to appear on the toolbar by default. Following your suggestion, I found that the bookmark list managed by this icon is stored in XBEL format at /home/carl/.kde4/share/apps/kfile/bookmarks.xml

to recap - your issue is that the bookmark button is not being displayed in the file dialog even though you set it to show in settings (wrench)
I can confirm this, seems like a bug I would think it would be the line "Show Bookmarks=true" in ~/.kde[4]/share/config/kdeglobals but it does not have that effect |

Well, it does display, but only for the current session. I want the icon active when the dialog opens, rather than having to open the Options(wrench) each time. Note that I was editing above response while you were responding - I did find the bookmarks list in /home/carl/.kde4/share/apps/kfile/bookmarks.xml |

right and to me it not retaining the setting is a bug

OK, found it, I think.
Following the suggestion, I changed Show Bookmarks=false to =true in section [KFileDialog Settings] of /home/carl/.kde4/share/config/kdeglobals. I then restarted kdm (logout, login) and the Bookmarks icon displays as I want. It did not work without the restart. Thanks for the pointers! |

I would recommend reporting this as a bug at bugs.kde.org - as that setting should be updated as you change the preferences from the settings menu.
