[SOLVED] Yakuake cannot load skin, doesn't start || Other KDE programs won't start
Sun Nov 02, 2008 4:03 pm
I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes, no K) and Yakuake used to work fine on 8.04. Now Yakuake won't even start up. This shows:
![]() The skin specified wasn't in the yakuake folder, so I added a skin, and edited yakuakerc appropriately. Same thing happens. Here is what happens when I run Yakuake from terminal:
And after I press 'OK' on the error window:
Also, when I try to run any other KDE program: konsole
konqueror

Those symbol lookup errors don't look too good. Do you have mismatched ( newer / older than the application ) or missing libraries? Ensure all KDE based ones are fully updated.
And why is Yakuake trying to use DCOP to communicate with kdeinit4? I am not familiar with Yakuake but I do know that KDE 4 does not support DCOP. Also it does not look like you are running KWin either, what Desktop Environment do you use?

I don't know if I have mismatched libraries. It's very possible I do, because I once tried to compile KDE. I have installed the packages from the Ubuntu repos.
I am running GNOME.

It seems that your KDE 4 install is broken, the applications and libraries are of conflicting versions. Ensure that all KDE packages are up to date using Synaptic ( I reckon that you have a big mix of old and new ). Make sure if you updated to Intrepid Ibex from Hardy Heron that you are using the appropriate repos and not any 3rd party KDE 4 repos, or Hardy Heron repos either.

Everything looks fine except there are two packages. kdelibs4c2a and kdelibs5 are both installed. If I try to uninstall kdelibs4c2a, it wants to remove all these as well, which I need:
I think that's a KDE 3.5 package, but there's KDE 3.5 apps that aren't 4 yet... EDIT: Even after uninstalling that, my problems persist.

Check to ensure that it (kdelibs5) is fully updated. It should be called kdelibs4 but someone at ubuntu obviously decided that it should be kdelibs5 instead ( I checked, kdelibs4 does not exist in Intrepid ).
Also this only affects KDE 4 applications, so it should be ok to reinstall the KDE 3 packages.

kdelibs5 is installed and up-to-date from the Ubuntu repositories.

What about Qt? ensure that all of that is up to date as well. I if you are using entirely Intrepid repository packages, and they are all up to date, you should have no problem.
could you please post /etc/apt/sources.list I am suspecting that a repository was not removed during your upgrade.

libqt4-core and libqt4-gui are installed and up to date.
/etc/apt/sources.list has all Intrepid repositories. The third-party repos were disabled after the upgrade, and nothing was different about KDE 4 when I enabled them again.
The weird thing is, that ktouch uses KDE4, and works perfectly fine! ![]()

Is only Yakuake affected now, or is Konqueror and Konsole still affected? if they are still affected you may wish to try reinstalling them ( force update ).
Did you install any proposed updates relating to Konsole / Konqueror / KDE?

Yakauke and Konsole and Konqueror are still affected, even after reinstallation. When I reinstalled those, aptitude removed libqt4-gui. KTouch still works.

Something KDE related is not updated. Intrepid shipped with KDE 4.1, not KDE 4.0.5, which is what you have installed, as shown from that KTouch screenshot. what is the version of kdelibs5 that you have installed? I am currently suspecting that some KDE applications could not be upgraded, and thus are holding you back from properly fully upgrading to KDE 4.1.

![]() And I searched for KDE in Synaptic. None of the packages had a version of 4.0.5. Only 4.1.2 and 3.5.10. Maybe these 4.0.5 remnants are from when I tried to compile KDE. But the packages would have overwritten those, as I tried to compile it months ago, before Intrepid.

Could you please paste the output of these commands?
This should show where the respective applications find their libraries. This should hopefully lead to a solution.
