KSystemLog

Sun Feb 24, 2013 8:54 am
In ksystemlog I don't seem to have a horizontal scrollbar. Is there no horizontal scrollbar? I can look at "details" on a per line basis to read lines that extend beyond the edge of the screen, but that seems tedious.

there does not appear to be one, just resize the window width (though there still may be a few messages that you'll need to use "details" for)

It seems like a bit of a shortcoming considering the purpose of the program is to make big boring log files easier to read. Looking at kernel log for firewall entries, most of them extend pretty far beyond the edge of my screen. I also looked for quite a while for some place where I could add a custom menu shortcut to a specific log that isn't already listed. If I wanted to look at ufw.log instead of kern.log for example. I don't think you can even pass a filename to open from a command line or in a link. I also had to disabled colored log lines because my color scheme is dark and the message text color seems hardcoded to dark blue. First I looked for a place to change the color options..finding none I came across disable colors.

I'm finding it easier to read with "cat /var/log/kern.log | grep UFW". Long lines wrap, which isn't ideal, but still better than nothing. You can also change font size on the fly and customize colors. Another bonus using cat and grep seems to be that filtered text is highlighted.

Update:
Even better! I made a script to run the command in konsole and use a specific profile with whatever color/font size settings I want. I still can't seem to force a H scroll to appear, I hoped I could specify the number of columns independent of window size or something. But since I can force it to use a smaller font than I normally would only for this script, I can see everything.

Code: Select all
#! /bin/bash
konsole --noclose --profile "FW Log" -e cat /var/log/kern.log | grep UFW

I want to use ksystemlog to view access logs from my dd-wrt router. Can anyone help me configure ksystemlog to read the logs?

did you look at settings -> configure, you can add files to one of the predfined "logs" (though it does not appear you can add new "logs")
