I did add the network monitor widget to the panel. Is there a way to make it show numbers in instead of the moving chart?

If the graph is tall enough, then it will show both a scale, as well as the current numbers on it.
Unfortunately I did not see an option to disable the graph or the scale, and just show the current status numbers.

You might want to try a third party applet, such as one of the ones available on kde-look.org.
