KDM - Two users with different DE

Wed Apr 10, 2013 10:27 pm
Hi folk!

I use KDE for long time ago, and I have never had a problem like this.

In my actual laptop are working two different users, one uses KDE (uses the laptop often) and the other uses OpenBox (maybe one or two times per week).

At first, the OpenBox user selected it session into the KDM menu, we tried LightDM because we want to have a default session per user (and not change it at login). LightDM show some problems with two session at the same time and we have returned to KDM, but now the default session for both is OpenBox.

In KDM, the previous version is selected as default, but it always login into OpenBox, does not matter who users is doing login or what session was previous.

It is possible to recover KDE as default session (the other user agree)?, or eve better, it is possible to have two different default sessions?

System information:
- Linux Mint KDE 12.04
- KDE 4.10.2
- Kernel 3.2.0-38-generic

Thanks in advance

Unfortunately users cannot set their desired desktop environment separately i'm afraid.
Just wondering, has the original user (who prefers KDE) ever logged into OpenBox?

It may have created a ~/.xinitrc file which is taking over.

Yes, by mistake, and a lot of times.

No, that file does not exist. I have search for some config file that say "who" was the last session, but I have not find it.

However, the OpenBox user has a file ~./xinitrc with startkde as default action. I have copied the file to the KDE user (with properly permissions) but it does not work.

Unusual... If you create a new user, are they able to login to KDE, or are they directed into OpenBox as well?

After create the new user and try to login, KDM (I suppose is KDM) asks me to change the password (root requires, it says) but I cannot write into the textboxes where I have to introduce the new password. I use a TTY to login with the new user, change the password, return to KDM and it logins to OpenBox (selected option: default (previous))

I have tried to remove KDM package with --purge option and reinstall. Nothing changes

Can you please check to see if any of the users have a ~/.dmrc file? If they do, please remove them.

It works!. Both users had the file, removed on both. After some login/exit operations, it looks that each user login in its DE session.

Thank you very much
