All effects have been disabled by the system. When I go to the Effects window and unclick some of the items marked, e.g. "fade", there is a message appearing that says:
"Desktop effects are not available on this system due to the following technical issues: OpenGL compositing (the default) has crashed KWin in the past. This was most likely due to a driver bug. If you think..., etc." One more piece of information: if I switch to xfce4 (startxfce4) or mate (mate-session) in the xstartup file, this problem does not occur. Thanks. |

Okay, I would suggest opening a thread in the KWin forum concerning this, as it definitely appears to be a bug in KWin itself.
Just a note - I would not expect compositing to function via VNC at all - which probably explains the error message.
