Hello,
using kdm 4.4.5, when I set "Language=de" in /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc, I got a kdm greeter with german display language, that is "Username" and "Password" were replaced by their german translations. But on another machine, with kdm 4.8.4 (from Debian wheezy) and "Language=de" in /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc, the greeter shows the english words, though I have kde-l10n-de installed. What is wrong? Do I have to install some additional package? Regards Christoph |

Has the system German locale been installed? This is usually a system wide package - the name is usually distribution specific though.

Hello,
I guess that kde-l10n-de, which I mentioned before, is the german locale, but I am not sure if I need some other language package. Maybe someone can tell me the exact files I need, so I can compare them with what is installed on my computer. Regards Christoph |

Can you try setting Language to "de_DE" instead?

Now, I found another computer with nearly the same configuration, only exceptions are that it has 64-Bit-Software and much more memory, and there the kdm greeter's language is german. Is it possible that translations are not loaded if a computer does not have enough RAM?

Nope, please double check bcooksley's solution. You need to set the language as:
de_DE
