I would like to read posts and post regarding topics of interest to me.

I have started akregator and looked for a free news server. I note one in Russia with many discussion and opened akregator with the link, but changed my mind and did not complete the 'I am not a Robot' box. I assume that I am not connected to this server. It does not appear at the left hand side.

A couple of points. Can you recommend a good free server? Am I right to be cautious regarding servers because of the risk of malware?

I assume that the programme to connect akregator is located at usr/bin/akregator

Akregator is a tool that displays content from rss feeds. These are actually web pages with some xml text (as opposed to servers), which Akregator or some other similar app reads to display the content (web pages in this case) defined within. You are not connecting to a "server" in any way differently than you are using a web browser to view web pages.

Most if not all major news outlets offer rss feeds, as do many other websites, such as personal blogs. The vast majority of feeds are free.

Since the feeds that you mention are just webpages, what is the advantage of akregator over the Firefox browser.

I've used Akregator myself on the BBC website for certain specific topics. It was alright but, for me, it often had stories that were not of great interest even though on-topic.

Try it and see what you think. I prefer just clicking links of general interest and sometimes these lead me to topics I had never even thought of. YMMV.
Don't like it, then just sudo apt purge akregator

Akregator is not for usenet. You will want to try out Pan. I think Thunderbird may still support newsgroups as well.
