I have tried Traverso and Audacity, but it seems I don't get some sound to the software.
I have Kubuntu Intreprid 8.10 32 bit on a 64 bit dualcore Celeron, I tried Alsa and Oss, I have
the win32 codecs and I have PCM, Line, Mic en Digital faders on Kmix open. Mic as choice.
Audacity also on Mic.

Soundrecorder was already there, but seems not to work either.
The players I have like Vlc, Mplayer, Kpayer, Totem etc. do have sound.
What could be the reason?

Have you gone into kmix - mixer - settings - configure channels and ticked microphone? It is probably muted...

All is configured right. But it doesn't work.
And I know Audacity from Windows (years ago) and PCLOS, so it is rather wellknown for me.
I don't understand what I'm doing wrong (while I should know.. :-D).

I play for instance sound from Streamtuner en Kplayer. Then I start Audacity.
When I tick the inputmeter it is 50% red (input-level) both channels and this is no sound because the red doesn't move. It looks like oscillating. But I don't hear a thing (volume open).
It is Oss in, Alsa out, mic on Kmix, stereo. No playthrough.

Something I also don't understand is that Audacity has no choice of inputdevice in a selectorbox.
(For instance line, phone, mic, line1, PCM, etc.)
So it shows in Audacity (in PCLOS) on my old computer.

I have spended almost a day now on this issue. I can not believe that recording would not be possible
in Kubuntu 8.10? Like I wrote: Even Sound recorder does not do anything.

I found out:

Also QARecord has that 50% background noise at the recording-level-meter.
So I now suppose every player has that problem. I don't know about Traverso, and
Audacity is crashing all the time. It is a very weak version or something is not right.
In PCLOS it was nog strong too, but this is worse.
When I give more 'capture' on the fader in the mixer, the sound-level becomes
higher then that backgroundnoise. Also easy to see with a microphone and moving the
mic-faders.
Normal sound from players (so not recording) is o.k. Sound throughput is not happening
it looks. (when I move the outputfader on Audacity the speaker-sound stays the same,
while it must be possible to change output-level at recordingtime).
Could it be this Alsa-configuration sends a far too high level of sound to the
recording software? For me it is becoming more and more electrickery, Ticker.:-)

It is the only thing wich does not work in Intrepid. Further I'm rather happy with this
release.

I found a lot about my board (brand 'Abit' with a HDA Intel ALC 662 (hw 0, 0 says Audacity)) togeher with the (K)ubuntu OS. Many people have problems with this soundchip and the software. Perhaps this information is helpfull?

By the way, I experimented further and it appears I also can't record sounds from outside
of the computer (for instance via 'line'). Strange background fenomenon on the indicators are here to stay. And no sound is recordable. Made files are empty. I have played with Oss and Alsa in the configuration, but no result.

But it IS possible to record something. Streamripper makes normal soundfiles!!
So how can that be??
But as far as I know it is not able to record something from the 'line' from source to computer?
I do that frequently witch my old machine. I use it from time to time like a recorder and soundeditor
with import and export of sound and music. With Kubuntu I have not seen that yet..!!

So soundmanipulation is still not very possible in Kubuntu 8.10 Intrepid..
The rest of the software is o.k. with me. What to do next?
Can this simple problem be solved, perhaps from (K)ubuntu? Maybe from Intel?

Here is what I get when I do lspci -v

More answers to myself:
with a lot of experimenting I succeeded in importing sound into Kubuntu and in some recorder like Audacity.. But it is not a very good way. Before you know there is noise in the recording.
Listening to a URL and recording it at the same time is not yet possible here.
I do that via my saving angel (K)Streamripper. After that recording things can go again like in
my old machine. Normal recorders/soundeditors don't work in this configuration, that is clear.

But don't think it's a party here, Streamripper doesn't do every URL..! It is limited.
It is a very abnormal way of working with sound I think. I'm thinking of buying some wellknown soundcard.:undecided: (If that would be a solution.)

I don't know if there is still some-one around here, but I'm curious if there is a possibillity
that soundrecording in Kubuntu 8.10 (the old way like with recorders) will be restored, please?
