I've recently reinstalled OS (distro hopped) on two on my machines. I have made a full backup (
Code: Select all
rsync -av
) of my home directory.

After the reinstall, I have copied over (
Code: Select all
rsync -av
again) back to the "blank" home directory. This placed kdewallet.kwl and kdewallet.salt into
Code: Select all
~/.local/share/kwalletd/
.

My user name and password are the same as they were before reinstall, but if I try to open kwallet and enter definitely the correct password, I get "Error opening the wallet 'kdewallet'. Please try again. (Error code -9: Read error - possibly incorrect password)".

One on of the machine, however, I created a new wallet and opened (unlocked) it, then overwritten it with the backuped files, I could see stored secrets. Unfortunately - once I've rebooted - above error pops up when i want to open my wallet.

I previously tried exporting all entries into XML and then import after reinstall. This approach allowed my to import stored secrets (stored Wi-Fi passwords), but my machine would not connect to any Wi-Fi, despite having a password in the kwallet.

So, what is the correct / working way to backup and then restore kwallet with all its secrets?

So, I've overwritten my wallet and salt files again and now I can open the wallet. My Wi-Fi passwords are all in there bus system does not "recognize" them and when i try to connect to a Wi-Fi for which I have a password in the kwallet, I still have to enter the password manually and that creates a new record in the kwallet.
