So that's it for KPager?

Mon Jan 05, 2009 6:33 am
:-(Yeah, I know about the widget. I've been using Kpager with fluxbox. Actually, it turns out there is a pager for fluxbox, bit it also turns out to be terrible. You can't move it. You can't resize it, there are no icons and you can't use it to switch desktops.

In order to get Kpager, do I have to install all of KDE3? Is there any plan to bring it back in the future? It's a lot more versatile and flexible than a widget. When using KDE3, I liked the fact that you could open it on demand with a keyboard shortcut. I think it's worth preserving, but from a half-hour of google, I get the feeling that I may be the only person on the planet who even noticed.

If there are any features you feel are missing from the current Pager plasmoid, it would be recommended to file feature requests on the KDE bug tracker if they don't already exist.

Well, as I said, my biggest problem is that (to the best of my understanding) I can't run it on fluxbox. I don't know if you'd call that a missing feature, or a bug. It's just the way it is. Applications run everywhere. Plasmoids run on plasma.

When plasmoids replace applications, the terms are a lot more finite. As someone who has been polishing an elaborate custom desktop configuration based on KDE applications running on Fluxbox, I have been really dreading this sort of thing, but if this is the only time it happens, I'll count myself lucky. I'm kind of boned here, but it's like Spock said: The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few... or the one. I'm clearly the minority, and maybe even a minority of one. I may just have to suck it up.

Maybe I can devote some energy to improving that fluxbox pager. It really is pretty horrible. based on what I've seen so far.:-S

Plasmoids can also be embedded in other apps (plasmoidviewer is a trivial example of this; Amarok a less trivial one).

Really? Well, that's pretty interesting, and I didn't know anything about it. Is there a way I can use an app to run the pager plasmoid in fluxbox or a similar window manager?

You could try "plasmoidviewer pager". Don't know how well that'd work for you. I would recommend setting it to appear on all desktops.

I've just tried kpager for the first time, and it appears to be a simple window that contains a pager widget. If this is all there is too it, then I don't see why it shouldn't be possible to do this with Plasma - but I'm no Plasma expert, so don't take this as gospel ;)

Of course, depending on how the code works, a port of kpager without libplasma may even be possible - I don't know :)

As a quick test, try

Code: Select all
plasmoidviewer pager

Edit:

Gah - beaten! :)
and see whether it behaves roughly the way you want it to.

Here's a link to a screenshot of the plasma pager running on Fluxbox.. Once again, I am suprised at the KDE team's ability to anticipate my needs. Kudos! Everytime I complain about KDE4, you guys prove me wrong, and you show me such terrific things that I don't mind being wrong, not one little bit.

KWin has the option to not show the border (decoration) of a (single) window. Not sure, if fluxbox has that too. If yes that could help to make it look even better (your plasma pager on fluxbox).

And in generel it could make it possible in a limited way to use all plasmoids there.
