like the subject says...kate's Open Recent list is always empty, even though I've opened lots of files.
This has been true for me for all the versions of kde4 so far. Right now I'm using 3.1.96 on KDE ver. 4.1.96 anyone else have this problem? anyone have a solution? |

It works fine for me, running 4.2.60 ( to be KDE 4.3 ) The only thing I can think of is that the file has incorrect permissions, or there is a damaged configuration file.

Which file? |

First try removing the directory $KDEHOME/share/apps/kate then try $KDEHOME/share/config/kate*

I have the same problem as reported by jwebster8. I am running Kubuntu Intrepid with KDE 4.2.0 and kate Version 3.2.0 on an AMD 64 PC.
I have done:
and executed sudo apt-get install --reinstall kate with no better results. Recently opened files are still not seen. Moreover, the kate tabbar plugin cannot be activated persistently. It disappears each time I start kate. This is on a fresh installation on a new machine with no residues from KDE 3.5.x. via legacy dotfiles. Any further suggestions most welcome. Thanks. |

Please try setting the environment variable KDEHOME before starting Kate:

I have done the above and still do not see recently opened files in File -> Open Recent. Has this to do with kate sessions? I do not have special sessions. I have tried invoking kate from the command line like you have suggested above and also from an icon on my new KDE 4.2-style panel. I have even tried adding the new kate session widget to the panel and trying it from there, but all to no avail. Is there some config variable that has been wrongly set to false? If I need to uninstall/remove something major and try re-installing, I am happy to do that, even if it involves some effort. My fear is that something basic has become corrupted or is incompatible for some reason, and is causing this hassle. FYI, I did install kile 2.1 built from a source package for intrepid obtained from a launchpad ppa that is now no more available, just in case that is contributing to this behaviour. Interestingly, kile 2.1 shows all recently opened files exactly as expected. Many thanks in advance for your kind help. |

Can you reproduce under a new user?

Yes. The problem persists with a freshly-minted user as well. Interestingly, the new user had the KDE application launcher in the new Kickoff Style and that has a "Recently Used" button. Clicking on the recently edited text file there brought it up loaded into kate. I can now do the same on my account, and when a text file is opened in kate in this way, the Open Recent list is populated by that single file. After closing it and invoking kate via panel icon or using the command line, kate opens with an empty Open Recent file list. Something is going on under the hood: but I do not know what! I am happy to troubleshoot further and thank you for your help so far. |

This is unusual. If you open a document in Kate itself ( with the open menu option ) is the file added to the Recent files list? ( Please check both Recent files and terminal execution methods )

When I invoke kate from a terminal and open a file using the File -> Open menu, the file that I have opened for editing appears when I click on the menu item File -> Open Recent. After closing that file, if I try re-invoking kate from the command line, and take a look at the File -> Open Recent menu item it shows a greyed out label "No entries". This behaviour is unchanged if I use the Filesystem Browser left tab in kate instead of the File -> Open menu item. I am unable to use the KDE Kickoff launcher Recently Used icon because recent documents have disappeared! Initially, there were only a set of font files that I had recently installed. When I cleared them, so that the list could be populated by editable files that I opened thereafter, no newer documents appeared with this icon. I tried selecting the file using Dolphin instead and then launched it from there using kate but the there is still no persistent Open Recent file list: only a transient indication of the current file while it is being edited. This entry disappears on re-firing kate. I am beginning to suspect that this either has something to do with the multiplicity of modes for opening a file and/or something to do with multiple, co-existent QT libraries that should not be there but are somehow there. Sadly, I do not know enough to probe further. Thank you. Chandra |

Recent files are maintained per Session ( Sessions Menu ) so please ensure that you have none listed under Sessions > Quick Open, except "Default Session"

I can confirm that I have nothing except the default session, i.e., no named sessions, and also no files under Sessions -> Quick Open. A very small icon appears at the top right when I click on Quick Open and this is strange: perhaps it is a default for something empty. I s there anyway to reset default behaviour for Sessions, assuming that the problem could originate there? FYI, I also deleted the apps/kate setu once more, just to be sure. but it resulted in the same behaviour. Thanks. Chandra |

Is it reproducable under KDE 4.2.1?

Can you please direct me to a Web link that details how I could install KDE 4.2.1 for Kubuntu Intrepid 8.10? I cannot break my present system by installing an alpha of Jaunty 9.04. Thanks. Chandra |
