OpenOffice bug?

Sat Jan 24, 2009 7:51 pm
I am assuming this is an OO bug relating to KDE 4.2.

distro: Kubuntu 8.10
kernel version: 2.6.27-9-generic
Nvidia driver: 180.22
KDE: 4.1.96 (4.2)
OpenOffice version: 3.0

I try to save an OpenOffice file I created but as soon as I click 'Save As' everything crashes and I mean, EVERYTHING. I cannot open any app or click anything to get an output. It's an entire system crash that requres reboot.

That's pretty bad, right?

I am not sure if this is a common bug but I didn't see anything similar in a search of the forum.

No one has any theories? Or OpenOffice is not a consideration?

I insist, though, that I upgraded KDE correctly. Despite some sig/segfault errors/crashes, most of the desktop worked okay or in other words, was tolerable but I use OO so if I can't save a file, I can't use KDE4 like that.

When this crash happens is the Caps Lock key responsive? This is a bug in the NVidia Xorg driver, by the sounds of it. Are you using 3D effects? If so, disable them and retry.

I have the Nvidia driver installed in Debian, too, but no problems.

I guess I can try disabling 3D effects but why?

Also, why would the driver crash only when using a function of OpenOffice and crash the entire system?

Don't you think this is serious when 4.2 will be released soon?

I retried and sorry to report, it didn't help or matter. I disabled all of the 3D effects.

No change.

I can press 'CTRL-ALT-DEL' and then it ends the session and goes to a new login screen (I think that is what keys I pressed. Another instance of that rebooted the system - I pressed the combo a 2nd time?).

Edit: sorry, I posted in the wrong area, btw.

Thanks for replying but the bugs seem too serious for me. I can't deal with my desktop crashing constantly and an app (OO) causing or involved in such crashes.

i already filed a bug report on this one week ago.. it seems to be a problem with the kde integration.. you can kill openoffice (and revive your desktop) by pressing "alt-ctrl-F2" then login and then execute "killall soffice" --- "alt-ctrl-F7" shows the desktop again....

you can prevent this bug (till it ist fixed) by changeing your "dialog settings" --->>>

tools > options > general + "use open office dialogs"

no crashes anymore...

You are right, that avoids the bug and allows me to save the document.

Thank you! I appreciate the time taken to respond to my post, too! That applies to everyone who replied.

@penguin: if this resolved your problem, could you please mark the issue as Solved? Thanks in advance.

@waldelf: Could we please have a link here to that bug so future searchers can track the issue? Thanks in advance.
