Multiple small problems in KDE4.2

Tue Jan 27, 2009 6:51 pm
Congrats to the KDE4 team. Using it on openSUSE 11.0 x64

Food for thought...

- Icons in the System Tray constantly change the black background color of the tray itself. See pic below, notice the different colors behind the icons
- Konversation not yet ported to KDE4 :(
- KMail does not clean its trash bin even if the option is checked in the configuration
- Konqueror (which I use as file manager (dislike Dolphin)) forgets the "use common view properties for all folders" option and automatically reverts to the "remember view properties for each folder" option instead
- In konqueror, the option View -> Preview increases icon size (Is this supposed to be that way? if so, it's very annoying)
- KWrite does not respect the Tab width of 8 characters. comparing KWrite4 to KWrite3 (kde 3.5.x), the latter uses Tab space accordingly
- Changing desktop theme in Desktop Settings makes panels grow in their size so I'll have to adjust them each time I change the desktop theme. I know one can lock them but constantly locking/unlocking is annoying

I know this is not the place to report such things, but I have no time to report bugs and follow the progress of each of my bug reports. Just thought you guys should know about these things

If bugs have not already been filed for the above issues on bugs.kde.org, please file them so that the developers can correct them for future versions. When you file them, could you please post links back here as well, so future searchers can track the issue? Thanks in advance.

hey bcooksley.. i really like your text .. it is now the first time in years of using linux that i report almost every bug i find.. (or at least have a look if there is already a bug report) and it's due to people like you who managed to induce me to do so... (hope this was English)

@ systemtray.. it seems like a problem with repainting it.. because unlocking the panel is enough to get it plain again.. can't i just tell plasma to repaint it every 10 seconds (as temporary workaround?)

am i right and this is just this problem with the argb visuals and it is a matter of time till all kde apps stop using rgb visuals and switch to argb? is it that simple? (i guess not ^^)

Unfortunately the fd.o system tray spec requires RGB visuals. Only a new spec can ultimately solve the problem.

I know it takes quite a bit of time to file bugs, but due to the limitations of Bugzilla, it's more useful to the developers if you were to put each issue in a separate bug, so that they can tell what issues are left and which ones are solved.

The system tray backgrounds issue is, if I recall correctly, caused by faulty ARGB code in Xorg, and not actually related to KDE code.

and how comes that the notification icon is never corrupted?

Because that is drawn by Plasma directly, it is not a fd.o system tray icon.

so theoretically plasma could do this for other kde4 apps too?

Only if they added backends to the system tray plasmoid ( more likely a generic backend for KDE 4 apps would be added )

However this is unlikely because then they wouldn't be usable outside Plasma, and this method isn't supported by Qt, requiring a whole new library to control interaction with the user, etc through this.

Weird. This was supposed to be fixed in 4.2. It is fixed on my system. The black box of the system tray is an RGB visual, just so this bug would not happen.

Nope, still happens sometimes, although much less often. (With NVIDIA)

Yeah, that'll only be fully taken care of once the current spec is dead. But at least it fixes itself in KDE 4.2. :)

Hi. Sorry for my English. Some strange things.
1. Krusader don't work as default file manager.
2. If you change the default file manager for Krusader in plasma applet Device Notifications displayed icon of Dolphin, the clique was trying to run Krusader, but nothing happens.
