How do I enable special characters through alt codes? (ie: Alt+0176 = °) Amidst a lack of answers at Ubuntu Forums, a user with Ubuntu 8.04 reported being able to use them, which is a sign to me that this is a KDE issue! :P So does anyone know how?

Sorry if this is not on-topic, but I've never understood why anyone want to use Alt-codes? Isn't it so much easier to use the character map? Just wondering...

Well, if you type a lot, it's much more convenient for workflow to have a possibility to enter all you need via keyboard, not to have to break up and use "character map".

Having to open character map and find your symbol is inconvenient and time-consuming, especially in full-screen apps. Since posting the topic, I think I can get used to compose keys. They are intuitive, so it won't be hard to learn. I figured out compose+tm for ™ on the first try. (Still working on copyright, though lol..) I'm starting to like the idea of letting alt codes go.

You could use XModmap to make the Alt codes activate the Compose keys.

Thanks for the suggestion! I have, since asking, realized that Compose keys make WAY more sense, and there is NO reason for me to have an attachment to Alt codes. I haven't looked into all of my familiar favorite special characters, but I imagine they are just as intuitive as the ones I've figured out so far (™, °, ©, ®).
