Searching File-Content with Konqueror (3.5.7) ist not easy:

Without the binaries-option it works to:
- all the original OOo files *. odt, *. odp, *. ods (Writer, Impress, Calc)
- no Draw files (*. ODG)!
With the binaries-option it works with:
- Windows Office *. doc and *. xls (Word and Excel)
- Calc files, as *. xls files from OOo (via Filters Excel97/2000/XP)

But no matches with:
- *.doc from OOo (via Filter Office97/2000/XP)
- *.pdf (any)

Questions:
- Is it possible to set binaries-option as default?
- What about searching *.doc from OOo and *.pdf?

Thanks for any answers
Urs

Hi,

What is the binaries-option? What distribution are you using?

I've been using KDE since 1.12 and I don't recall seeing that package (at least with Red Hat, Mandrake, OpenSuSE, or Kubuntu). But then again, that's a Long Time... (Red Hat 5.2 was when?) ;-)

Have you tried using Beagle/Kerry, or Strigi? Or does your system have resource issues?

Hi Jerry
We are working with a Univention Distribution based on Debian (Including KDE 3.5).
I have to use Konqueror 3.5.7.
The Option "Einschlisslich Binardateien/including binary files " allows to search text in non text files.
A binary file is a computer file which may contain any type of data.
I fear only KDE can help me. :-(

Thanks. For future reference, I do know what a binary file is. I'm a Systems Engineer and Administrator, and I've had my own computer(s) since 1985. Guess I should add that to my profile somewhere... ;-)
I was asking about the "binaries-option", not what is a binary...

I'm not aware of a similar (binaries-option) package for Kubuntu, it may be part of a different package, and installed that way.

But - during a test search on some .doc files, I found that I had to check off the "include binary files" checkbox, on the Contents tab of the Find Files tool. Do you have a similar checkbox on your system(s)?

Hi Jerry i'm sorry about the explanations.....to an expert...
I'm only a user..... i'm shure you know the Difference:
If i have a problem, i have to reeboot my computer and the Administrator has to be root ;-)

Back to the problem:
I'm working with a German-Version and you are right: On the second tab, in the Find Files (Ctrl-F) tool ist this option.
It is very difficult for our users to find or not find Text in Files, with this strange behavior (see first posting).

Unfortunately i found no way to insert a screenshot to this Forum as attachement.
Greetings from the other side of the globe ;-)
