kovpn how does it work

Tue Jul 21, 2009 3:37 pm
Hi all,

I configured openvpn on my client machine and I can connect succesfuly.

Now I wanted to have a GUI to use on my desktop (I use gentoo).

I emerge kovpn. I ran it and the only documentation I can find is that you have to add a host (in Configure kovpn) with 127.0.0.1 and port 11194.

However I cant seem any link where this port 11194 port is coming from.
It is not in netstat and I dont know what service should provide it.

I tried to find documentation but there is just none :S, no user experiences, ...

I need some understanding what components are needed for this to work

Thanks in advance

I don't know how, today it is working as expected. My laptop powered off because the battery was empty. Maybe some service needed to be restarted? (I tried restarting dcopserver)

There was a difference in behaviour though.
I started the service: /etc/init.d/openvpn start
and instead of asking me the password immediately,
I got these messages in the openvpn log file:

Code: Select all
Tue Jul 21 17:52:23 2009 us=45453 MANAGEMENT: TCP Socket listening on 127.0.0.1:11194
Tue Jul 21 17:52:23 2009 us=45995 Need hold release from management interface, waiting...

You can see that it is now listening on the port.

When I connect with kovpn it asks me the certificate password and in the log file I see
Code: Select all
Tue Jul 21 17:52:25 2009 us=23460 MANAGEMENT: Client connected from 127.0.0.1:11194

So this is fixed
