Adept 3.0 is shipped with Kubuntu 8.10 - I don't know if there is some repository available for 8.04, but given the fact that 8.10 is scheduled for release on oct 30th, I recomend to wait another two weeks or try the currently available beta, which is already quite useable.

I'm trying to use 3.0 but I don't understan how it works. Can't find any packages when I am using the search box. When I start typing in it the package list empties. |

Finding packages by their name is sorta still broken. For example, typing "kgrub" will cause "kgrubeditor" to show up momentarily, only to disappear. Mornfall says he thinks he roughly knows what the problem is and will work on fixing it before 3.0 final.

Adept 3.0 beta 4 should hit today, solving the search bug and bringing a whole host of improvements/bugfixes.

I do not really get the point of this... Isn't *Ubuntu supposed to migrate towards PackageKit ? What's the point of developping a new version of Adept instead of speeding up the development of KPackageKit ?
This is not meant to be rude, this is just something I'm really wondering.

I don't use Adept, not even *buntu, but I think it's just a different development. Arch has another one, called Shaman. Why should everyone now concentrate on PackageKit? Is it the solutions to all problems ever conceived? I don't think so.

I'm not using a Debian-based distro at the moment (the perpetual distro hopper that I am...) but I was wondering...has it been considered to implement the settings part of adept as kcm-modules? I mean, to me it feels very logical to have a "Manage Software repositories" and "Add/remove" programs in System-settings.

There is an "Add/remove" and manage Software repos is in Adept itself. I dont feel its necessary to have it in systemsettings. Actually Kubuntu was never this way if i remember correctly.

Very true, but: having something in system-settings makes it easier to find for people unused to the system. Rightly or wrongly, people tend to expect to find system-settings of any kind in a centralized location. Kcron and Kgrubeditor can run as separate programs as well (or at least they used to, not sure if that's still the case) but are now in system-settings. Personally, I would have preferred to have all of adept in system-settings only except for the tray-notifier - much like the approach taken by the guys developing Kpackagekit, but maybe that's just me... Anyway, hope you didn't take this the wrong way: it's great that it's ported to KDE4 even if I would have done it in another way. It was, after all, one of the big annoyances of mine that I had to use the KDE3.x version when I last had Kubuntu installed.

i really hope kpackagekit finds its way to systemsettings soon.. it makes no sense that adept is seperated and thats hard for new users...

Package management isn't settings. If you throw everything in System Settings it might as well become a menu itself.

i disagree... you should put softwaresources in systemsettigs as well.. and you clearly dont find settings and packagmanagement divided in kickoff.. as far as i remember suse does this too in yast.. but ... i will be fine with everything as long as i have the choice to configure it differently.. maybe an option to make an own category like "personal" or "computer administration" where you can link your own apps and scripts would be a nice compromise..
oke.. sorry .. this was long enough OT.. ill discuss this somewhere else...
