KWallet

Thu Oct 16, 2008 3:37 pm
Alright, this really aggravates me. When I login, I have to enter my password. Then when I launch any application that requires a stored password in KWallet, I have to enter a password again. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of storing the password. Is there a way to have KWallet start at login without me having to enter the password for it again?

Usually, when an application wants to access KWallet for the first time, you are asked wether the app may always access the wallet or just this time (and maybe some other options).

Open the KWalletmanager and go to Settings → Configure Wallet → Access Control (the second tab). Check the rules for your applications.
Another cause may be that the wallet is closed automatically after a specified time, if it was not in use. This option can be set in the first tab of the same dialog.

Well, that second password is used to secure your other passwords. I don't think it would be advisable to store them without encryption, or storing the hash somewhere on the disk.

Main showstopper for me is this one - Bug 149999

In short: Why does my IMAP/POP/SMTP passwords have to be reentered only because I have previously cancelled the kwallet password dialog box (the one that asks for the kwallet "master password")? Here is a possible scenario: I am writing an email, and press send (or mistakenly press CTRL-Enter...). Then I change my mind when the kwallet password dialog has popped up. The only way to do that is to choose "Cancel", so I do that. The next time I want to send an email, I will then have to reenter the SMTP password. So kwallet must have forgotten it, just because I cancelled the kwallet "master password" dialog previously? I never asked kwallet to forget my SMTP password.

KWallet never 'forgot' your SMTP password. it couldn't have as the wallet is encrypted and the decrypting password was never supplied.
Just guessing that this is the fallback behaviour for when KMail can't use KWallet, however i would say that it should ask the second time when using KWallet previously failed, providing both 'KWallet' and 'manual entry' options.

KWallet never 'forgot' your SMTP password.

It's not me the original bugreporter and I can remember that I did not reenter my SMTP passwords.

But POP3 is still the issue.

however i would say that it should ask the second time when using KWallet previously failed, providing both 'KWallet' and 'manual entry' options.

+1

You can use a password-less wallet.
