I was just wondering...does anyone know where the bug is that makes OO.org make the panel(s) in KDE4 flicker when it is running? And more importantly: what kind of work is done to at least make it less noticeable?
I mean, is it a Qt issue, a KDE issue, a driver issue (I only have an nvidia-equipped machine to test on...), an OO.org issue or a combination? Right now I'm leaning towards an OO.org issue since that's the only program that to my knowledge triggers the behavior (granted, firefox and OpenOffice are the only two non-KDE programs I run on a day-to-day basis, but there are some others such as Gimp and Maple that I run on occasion). Sometimes it's a migraine-inducing flicker, sometimes it doesn't flicker at all, and sometimes on a tolerable level but I've been unable to find a common denominator to explain when one behavior would be expected rather than another. The version of OO doesn't make a difference at any rate. Not between 2.4.0, 2.4.1., and 3.0.0 at least. Any ideas?

It's a known driver bug with the nvidia drivers. Other apps trigger it too, but OO.o triggers it the easiest.

Ah, okay. I guess I have to hope the next version of the nvidia-driver does not have that particular bug then. Just out of curiosity...which other apps trigger it? I've never seen it triggered except when OO.o is running, and there are quite a few different programs installed on my machine (and some I don't know why I keep them around...)

Actually I forget which other apps trigger it ^_^, but I know that OO.o ain't the only one. (I remember other apps being reported to affect it in the bug report filed at KDE.)

Apparently the bug lies with the Damage extension of Xorg, but nvidia is the only driver to trigger it at the moment. This freedesktop.org thread has some discussion about how to fix the problem, but I don't know if anything's happened since then.
Thunderbird and Seamonkey are two other applications that have this problem. (I wonder if Firefox 2 does as well?) |
