I was able to do this easily under KDE 3.5 (Mandriva PWP 2008.1 x64).
Having just load Mandriva PWP 2009.1 with KDE 4.2.4 I try to send a ctrl-alt-del but KDE grabs it and interprets it. This is with the VM as the active window. Under 3.5 KDE would not pick it up unless the focus was on the desktop vs the VM's window. I'm sure there's a way to get around it, I just haven't been able to locate it yet. TIA, Bill |

What VM are you using?
Usually you would use a "Host Key" instead of the actual combination. For example, if it's VirtualBox, the Host Key is the right Ctrl, so you'd press Right Ctrl + Del.

I believe Ctrl - Alt - Delete is a Global shortcut. Try the following to exclude the VM window from these shortcuts.
Right Click Window decoration > Advanced > Special Application Settings > Workarounds. Change "Block Global Shortcuts" to "Force" and check the box beside it.
KDE Sysadmin

Thank you all for your suggestions. I made some headway with modifying the window behavior.
