(Not) fun with ssh and KDE

Wed Oct 07, 2009 5:18 am
So last night, I was away from home, but I needed to check some stuff from my computer including email. Since I have ssh running on my home computer, I ssh'ed with X-forwarding and ran some of my applications, including Kontact, from a Fedora machine.

That went all and well, except for a few unpleasant surprises I got when I got home...

While I was running KDE applications remotely, there I had KDE running at home. And apparently, some applications don't work well when there are more then one running at the same time.

The first thing I noticed was that I could not read the email that I received in KMail. The message title would appear as red in the list, but the message pane would not load. Furthermore, it could not be deleted or even changed to "read". After restarting KMail a few times and fiddling with copying other messages from one folder to another, I was able to get rid of the bad message and get a copy of a working one - so this isn't a problem anymore.

Here's the big problem though: KWallet stopped working. That is, the password box pops up, and then when I enter the password, clicking "OK" does nothing! The window stays up as if nothing happened. This is pretty bad because I obviously can't open the wallet manager to export the passwords, and I have a lot of them. Anyone have any ideas on what I should do?

Thanks!

Ouch. Have you tried creating a new session by logging out and logging back in again? It could simply be a temporary issue as the files have changed underneath the applications.

Nope, I've actually rebooted a few times since then.

Try removing the contents of $KDEHOME/ksocket-$HOSTNAME

Try creating a new user and copying the contents of just $KDEHOME/share across.

I tried it and the result was the same - KWallet passwords dialogs don't work (They do work for new users, though)

Furthermore, I found that aside from KWallet, most other password dialogs, like kdesu, don't work either! :((

Does KDESu, etc. work under a new user?

The problem is definitely in ~/.kde4/share/config because copying the config causes the same problem for a new user, but I have no clue what file that could be...

Edit: Looks like the file is ~/.kde4/share/config/kdeglobals

Edit: Deleted that file and now everything works. Yay!

Interesting information. Never had a case where kdeglobals was corrupted.
