Sun Nov 29, 2009 3:43 pm
i've Arch and KDE 4.3.3 and network printer Canon PIXMA IP5200R

so i want to print, but no printers found, of course.

so i tried to set up systemsettings, Printer set up.

new printer... system asked me for url (http://) but why if i want it to accept IP of printer?? never mind, i tried to type some adrres(like http://bla.com) and NEXT
now i can choose:
a) choose a printer from DB, bt Canon is not included
b) give a PPD file, but i have no one
c) look for driver to download, but it's desiabled Find button

whot should I do?

You should be able to do just that. http://192.168.0.238 or whatever. Did you start System Settings as root? Your description doesn't sound like the dialogue to add a networked printer.

First, you should open localhost:631 in a browser, Administration, and give the root password. Then use that to set up CUPS for the printer. You will need to have found a ppd file first, because the database will not have recent models. http://www.openprinting.org/show_printe ... non-iP5000 is the place to start reading.

You will also need to know some technical information about the kind of connection it uses - for instance, does it have a built-in JetDirect interface. The printer's manual should tell you this.

Once you can print a test page from the CUPS setup pages, then return to the System Settings interface, and if the printer is not already listed, select New Networked Printer and set it up there.

Canon are not the most helpful of manufacturers
