Login problem with KDM

Tue Dec 15, 2009 2:39 am
Hey guyz,
I'm not sure what is the problem, but i cannot login to my system. This is what happen to me:

I have an archlinux installed on first partition. I then installed fedora on another partition. Everything went well. But when i went back to archlinux, i cannot login.

The KDM showed up, but eventhough i've written the correct user name and password, the KDM brought me back to the login screen again.

I was able to login via console though. However, i got a message that my user "keripix" didn't have a directory.

I tried "cd /home/keripix" and it said that i didn't have the permission to enter. I already chown the keripix directory, and now im able to access my home directory.

But, every time i want to run root as normal user, i was told that the authentication failed. This happens when i execute command such as "$ su ".

Back to the KDM problem. Ive already created a new user, but still, eventhough i use the new user, i still can't login.

Then i try to use SLIM instead of KDM. And then im able to login to my system.

However, there are many more problems. Such as there's no text on my konsole screen. I cannot execute "kdesu xxxx". Network manager is not running.

As I'm very confused with whats going on with my system, if i need to post any log message or anything, i will do. Guyz, please help.

Thanks in advance. (Sorry for any english mistake :) )

It looks like Fedora has somehow severely tampered with your Arch installation, and it seems very likely that PAM is probably brain damaged. Do you use seperate /boot and /home partitions?

No. Both arch and fedora have their /boot and /home in one partition. How to fix PAM problems?

Fedora should not have been able to affect Arch in that case.... and therefore Arch's PAM configuration shouldn't have been affected. I would recommend checking /var/log/messages after you are denied use of su.

Are you in the 'wheel' group? Check the output of 'groups'

Ok..ive already read the /var/log/messages.log file, but which information is actually usefull for this?

Oh yea, ive also read the /var/log/kdm.log. And in one line, it says that the folder /var/tmp/kdecache-root is owned by uid 500 instead of 0.

My uid is 1000. Is this normal? Ive already chown the folder to root, but still no luck in logging in.

Ok, as root, drop down to run level 3, and remove all files inside /tmp and /var/tmp, then reboot.
