Converting KDE3.5 knotes to KDE4

Thu Dec 31, 2009 6:33 am
OS: Debian squeeze (Linux 2.6.30-2-686)
KDE 4.3.2

I managed to accumulate about 200 knotes when I was running KDE3.5.
(Yes, it's absurd to have so many of them but I'm always jotting down stuff I'm afraid that I will forget. Every now and then I try to thin out this collection but ...)

I just upgraded to KDE 4.3.2 and now I can't figure out how to get knotes to handle those old notes.
After bringing up knotes for the first time in 4.3.2 (so that it created the directory ~/.kde/share/apps/knotes)

I couldn't find anything resembling an import command, so I replaced that directory with the one that I had saved from KDE3.5:
~/.kde3/share/apps/knotes
and I also replaced ~/.kde/share/config/kresources/notes/stdrc
with the corresponding file that I had saved in my .kde3 directory.

knotes steadfastly ignores those old files and only shows me the new notes that I create. For example, the large file
~/.kde/share/apps/knotes/notes.ics immediately gets replaced by a tiny file with the same name (but the 200 tiny files named libkcal-xxxx.yyy that I copied into the ~/.kde/share/apps/knotes/notes directory seem to be unaffected.

Can anyone suggest something else that I might try?

I wonder whether KJots might help? It's Notebooks, in Kontact. There is certainly an Import facility there, so you might get one note per page. Tedious, I would think, but it might work. I don't have any old notes to try it on.

Thanks for the quick response, annew!

Alas, KJots rejected my old notes also.
I tried both filters (and no filter) and various different approaches to the old note files.
nada.

The notes are in ~/.kde4/share/apps/knotes/notes; I simply copied the whole /knotes folder from KDE3.5 to KDE4.3 before I made my first KDE4 note and it accepted them.

Given the volume of notes, you find it quicker to save the existing KDE4 notes as text, delete the KDE4 /knotes folder and import the KDE3 /knotes folder. Then copy the text back into new KDE4 notes.

Thanks for your response, John!

The contents of the notes seem to reside in the file, notes.ics.
The knotes/notes directory contains about 200 small files that seem to contain instructions for how to find a particular note inside of notes.ics.

Here is what I tried:
quit knotes
delete the ~/.kde/share/apps/knotes directory
copy ~/.kde3/share/apps/knotes to .kde/share/apps/
delete the ~/.kde/share/config/kresources/notes directory
copy ~/.kde3/share/config/kresources/notes to .kde/share/config/kresources

I then brought up the knotes app again.
An empty note appeared on the screen.
Then knotes could only find one note (the one that it had just created).

Here is the state of that directory following the above steps:

~/.kde/share/apps/knotes> ls -l
total 156
drwxr-xr-x 2 16384 2009-12-31 19:01 notes
-rw-r--r-- 1 359 2009-12-31 18:48 notes.ics
-rw-r--r-- 1 132297 2009-12-31 18:48 notes.ics~
~/.kde/share/apps/knotes>

You said, "import the KDE3/knotes folder ... "
Does the term import suggest that there is something else that I should have done?

With thanks,

P.E.

Since my knotes just reused the notes its older version had created, the approach of simulating a new start should have worked.

Maybe you also need to replace the .kde/share/config/knotesrc with the one from the previous installation.

Cheers,

I didn't do either of these steps, just the first two. Can you undo these steps and see if it makes a difference?

No it was just another way of saying 'copy from'
