Was trying to figure out what the issue is exactly, not trying to complain tho; saying before people start QQ!

Anyway KDM crashes to a blinking cursor randomly, sometime I have to do (xdm start) to get kdm to load from console, or it won't load and xdm will just load itself, sometimes it works fine, but this is all random. All my configs are correct as it's been discussed in the Gentoo forums. I wanted to know if this a user fixable problem or something that needs to be fixed upstream. In the end you guys are doing a great job tho, I beta tested kde-4.0 and can see the improvements over time. Keep up the good work and thanx!

Have you checked in the X logs in /var/log/ to see if KDM outputs any messages as to why it is crashing? Also, please ensure you are using the latest release of KDE, 4.4.3.

Ya it is the latest release and it is an errorless problem. It is actually an error that is going around so many distros right now, and I've fixed in so many different ways it's so hard to put a thumb on the issue. That is why I asked in the kde forums, figuring maybe a dev knew the answer. Various ways that I've fixed this problem is:

Updating policykit, pam-base or console-kit with various use flags and resulting back to the original settings.

re-emerging kdm, policykit, pam, or xorg-server.

Changing scripts in /etc/conf.d/?

some other things I can't think of atm!

not that kdm doesn't start, it's just random I can restart my system 100 times and kdm will load say 30/100 no problem and the other 60 times I have to login in as root and do (xdm start), but even then sometimes kdm will load or other times xdm will just load. That what I'm trying to say it's such a random issue, that there is no exact fix for the problem.

Unfortunately I don't know why this may be occuring, however it is possibly a race condition in an init script.
