Making Hotkey

Fri Nov 19, 2010 2:45 pm
Occasionally, I have to make a data file that requires 4 columns of numbers that have to be in specific fields. I can generally cut and paste the data, but data isn't in the proper columns. I can hand edit each field, which is tedious, but a long time ago one of our previous IT guys showed us a way to hit a cntl something, then type a sequence of keys, then hit a cntl something. from then on just hitting 1 key would repeat that action. This helps a lot. Does anyone know what I am talking about? Or was it a bad dream?
Thanks,
Vjk

What you are looking for is called a "macro"

I could tell you how to do it in Vim...

What software are you using? kate? openoffice? kwrite?

I'm afraid Kwrite does not support macros :(

I don't know any KDE editors that support macros. Here's a wishlist for Kate: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44908

In the comments nedit was mentioned as an editor that supports macros. I also know that emacs and vim support this feature, but they can be hard to get started with (especially the latter since it's very different from "normal" text editors).

Vim is indeed very difficult to learn. Once you are used to it though you can't go back to any other editor (at list IMHO).

Hope you find the solutions to your problem!

PS:Openoffice has macros too
