Okay messed up my file association types earlier today, however I managed to get them back after a reboot. Now the Ark won't work as expected or as it used to. Also the icon for tar.gz has changed to silver zip icon(previously it was brown square icon with tar written on it.)

Thing is if I unpack a foo.tar.gz file within dolphin(using right click->extract archive here) it just partially decompresses the file, I then get the foo.tar file which again needs to be extracted.How can I restore it to work as default?

I had try to mv my .kde folder to .kde-bak and reboot, all my settings were reset back to defaults however the Ark behaved the same, but in new user account it's working as it should, how?

Look under ~/.local/share/applications for relevant files ( likely named "ark.desktop" or similar ) and delete them. It is safe to move your old ~/.kde4/ back in place (not while KDE is running though)

Hi, I already did that, removed all possible ark related files from ~/.kde/
arkrc and the *.desktop file(however there was no ark.desktop found, tried locate as well but it didn't find it)

Bizarre thing is if I rename foo.tar.gz to foo.tar.bz2 it extracts all teh contents directly instead of two step process....any more ideas?

Or best option, can I somehow copy a default file association config file from kde(one used to create for new users, kind of like files in /etc/skel/)?

Well there wasn't any file in mime folder/subfolders which had tar or gz in their name. I ran the command, it completed with a long output message, then rebooted the system and... it still remains the same.

I would like to add that the tar.gz icon has another small zip icon on it, which cannot be seen normally or in new account.

I was referring to the following files, which are located in sub-directories of ~/.local/share/mime

Please remove the various files in ~/.local/share/mime (but not the folders!) outside of KDE, then log in.
