Hey all,

I'm having consistent trouble with KDE4.4 where anything which causes the display to change brightness sets it to a uniform dim level. This includes plugging and unplugging the laptop, leaving it idle 30 seconds, or hitting "apply" while tweaking any of the power profiles.

I can bump up the brightness either by echoing "up" to /proc/acpi/ibm/brightness or by using the fn-home keys, but 20-30 seconds of reading and it drops back down.

I've tried to tweak the power schemes in "system settings > power management" to no avail. I've disabled and enabled PowerDevil using the "Let PowerDevil manage screen powersaving" ticky box and that doesn't work either.

Anyone have any other ideas?

System details: rnning lucid (10.04) and kde 4.4.2 on a T42P

If you create a new user, does this behaviour persist there?

Sorry for the long lag in updating, and thanks very much for the useful question. I created a test account and while there were still some issues it didn't auto-dim within the time frame that mine had. Deleting (well moving) my .kde directory also did the trick, and fixed a bunch of really weird menu artifacts I'd been seeing as well. I guess some things worked really well in the upgrade, and some just didn't take.

It still dims the screen every time I switch to terminal (ctrl-alt-f1 and back) or change power settings (plugging the laptop in if I manually set it to high brightness on battery) but it's leagues better only having to worry about it when those events happen.

If you have any debugging advice for those please send it my way!

I experience the overriding of brightness settings myself. I think this is intended behaviour however. What PowerDevil should probably do is only change the brightness if it matches the brightness of the previously active profile.

Well or alternately, let me configure a profile which matches what I want. It's sort of odd that if you max out the brightness on the slider you don't actually max out the brightness.
