This is my first post!! I thank all the people who contribute towards this wonderful piece of softwares(KDE and KDE apps).

I have a serious problem with KDE in fedora 14, I first installed the gnome edition then installed KDE 4.5.5 after that(I also tried fresh install of F14 KDE, still issue pertains).

My brightness and all other function keys and power management tool under Gnome works out of box. But my problem is, in KDE none of function keys work and the slider in the power Management tool doesn't change the brightness at all. But, when I press the brightness fn keys, I see the notification in the screen(that usually should fill bars in the progress box if increased and reduce the num of bars if decreased(brightness)) just shows no bars at all either increased or decreased but the brightness fluctuates weirdly and goes back to the original level.

Do you have HAL or UPower installed, and which version of KDE are you using?

Can you verify that the GNOME Power Manager is not running simultaneously and conflicting with PowerDevil, KDE's Power Manager?

Veirified, Gnome power manager is not running. I have even tried fresh install of KDE Fedora 14 spin, no luck. I love KDE, but I value my eyesight more, as I can't see with high brightness all time. Thanks.

If you (as root) lower the value present in /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness using echo, does the screen brightness change?

No, it doesn't change, also the value that is present there is already a 0. But when I echo any value to "/proc/acpi/video/VGA1/LCD/brightness" it changes the brightness.

But it would be great if there is any way to make function keys work. Seems like Gnome-power manager can help me, is there any way to turn off power devil and just run Gnome Power Manager? Just want to try that and see because when I removed GPM, I can't change brightness in Gnome, after installing it brightness fn keys worked in gnome.

KDE Power Management can be disabled in System Settings > Startup and Shutdown > Service Management. You will need to logoff and back in again for it to take full effect.

You should then be able to start the GNOME power manager. Please file a bug at bugs.kde.org, as it should be able to change the brightness. It appears that your system doesn't support the method KDE uses to control the screen brightness at this time.
