Get Hot New Stuff problems

Tue Jan 18, 2011 4:57 pm
Does anyone know what the issue with Get Hot New Stuff in KDE is? It seems many implementations of it have been broken since at least KDE 4.5 and are still broken in KDE 4.6 RC 1. This includes plasma themes, window decorations, plasma widgets, dolphin service menus, and maybe others I haven't tried.

Can't you download anything with it? I just tried downloading a windeco and a wallpaper and that worked without a hitch.

As far as wallpapers go though, I frequently (a lot more frequently than I used to anyway) get a "The downloaded file is html. Would you like to visit the site instead" message.

The problem with windecos and plasma themes is that the update mechanism either doesn't work or doesn't remember updates. So you can download them, but no matter how many times you update to the most recent version it will always show an "update" button next time you open the GHNS interface. See Bug 256473. You also cannot uninstall plasma themes. See bugs 224745 and 252612

Service menus, on the other hand, download but throw an error during installation. See Bug 214054

Plasmoids download but the download is forgotten after reboot, so it is no longer shown as downloaded in the GHNS interface. See Bug 234265

As for the HTML thing, I already provided a suggested fix for that, but that is more of a wish than a bug. See Bug 256472.
