I've been trying to figure out what the "Show Active" button in Kate does, but so far I cannot see what it does at all. Can anyone enlighten me?

It is for the Documents panel. If you have a lot of documents open, you can scroll the documents panel so the file you are currently editing is no longer visible. Clicking that button will scroll the documents panel so that the current file is visible there.
Also, if you are using tree mode in KDE SC 4.6+, you can collapse the tree that contains the current file, making it no longer visible in that case either. In this situation clicking the button will expand the tree containing the current file, making it visible.
