Unicode Character Issue

Wed Feb 16, 2011 8:25 pm
Hi im from maldives...the only use that i have with KDE is that it fails to recognise characters from my native language. However GNOME apps tends to recognise them... i remeber back in 2006 when i was using KDE 3x series it worked properly.

When i add the keyboard layout... maldives and try to type in thaana i dont see characters i only see squares....im using unicode fonts...

You can see it works in GNOME but not in KDE...you can take a look at these screen shots...

Any help or any workaround is much appreciated..this is the only reason preventing me from using KDE full time...

Those squares seem to indicate that KDE cannot locate an appropriate font to render the characters in. Unfortunately there isn't much that can be done for this other than install the appropriate fonts. Your distributor may have font packages which can assist in fixing this.

I doubt this ussue can be solved by installing appropriate fonts.

On the same computer with the same set of installed fonts here konqueror displays only squares, whereas in Firefox I see the characters like in the screenshots.

Seems to me that konqueror does not select the appropriate font to display these characters, maybe its using a font where the characters for Unicode-Block Thaana (0780–07BF) are not defined.

@malikdhadha
Please look at http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode ... /index.htm and try to find a font which supports Thaana characters
