strange characters

Tue Aug 16, 2011 7:46 pm
Hello I have some files on my system with strange filenames. I can;t delete or rename them. For example I have a file with the name Ge/rard zo an e with an / above.
I think KDE can't handle this. How can I solve his issue?

Well, I still give you an answer:

Don't use any signes except small letters a to z, number 0 to 9 and the understroke_ for folders and file names. Do not use a space sign, the understroke is replacing them. On Unix Computers the lower case and the upper case letters are different, in the windows World they are equal.

You probably ment an «é». Have a look in «KCarSelect» to see all the different codes this sign has in various applications (HTML, Unicode, UTF coes, etc).

Thanks for you reply. I always avoid spaces and special characters, but this was a file that I download on the internet.

Thanks!

Yes, I know this sitation. Therefore, first thing is always to rename the file with a proper name, so the problem of not opening properly can be avoided.
With the Firefox add-on «Download them All!» I can rename any document already before the download starts!!!

The filename may not have been in UTF-8 - which KDE cannot handle - and which hasn't been the case on a linux system for many years.
