Changing distros

Thu Oct 27, 2011 1:16 am
Hello all,

This is my first post here, i've been a linux user since Jaunty, and switched to kde when unity was announced. Since then, i've been amazed by how good kde really is, and wonderfully smooth its user experience. I have not been very satisfied with kubuntu mainly because it makes krita not work well with my Aiptek drawing tablet. I've read that people were using the same model as my tablet on opensuse, and i'm seriously considering switching as I do a lot of work on photographs and drawings.

I have fears of finding the softwares i've grown used to in opensuse, so please, if anyone has any information about the availability of these softwares for opensuse, please drop me a line. Some of these softwares might sound like absolute beginner questions, but I guess I'm one of the new generations of linux users that have become drawn to it because of its newfound user friendliness.

Here's the list:

Kate (I heard opensuse comes with a less powerful editor "kwrite")
Guayadeque music player (I use the svn version, so I guess the real question here is SVN?)
SoundKonverter
Krename
gtkpod
Handbrake video converter
Kdenlive
Converseen (image converter)
MyPaint (realistic drawing application)
Darktable
Krita
The Calligra-Suite (most importantly Krita, of course)
Basket notepads (not so important if calligra suite is available (braindump))
Calibre (for my nook)
Oregano (circuit design, for class)
Enna media center, or a usable XBMC (XBMC is completely unusable in Kubuntu)

Please drop a line here if you know if one or more of these applications is available for opensuse.

Thanks in advance,

You might have to compile Oregano (or run under wine) as I don't see an openSuse package

Nor for Enna but XBMC is available

MyPaint is available in a user repo http://software.opensuse.org/search?q=M ... debug=true

everything else should be available

Thank you very much everyone for all the helpful links and responses.

It seems the switch will go smoothly for the most part.

Oregano is kind of important for me, so I'll keep an eye out for an openSUSE package.

Also, does anyone use XBMC in openSUSE? Using it in kubuntu is a nightmare, it lags all the time, and is almost unusable.

One final question: how fast are packages moved to the new openSUSE version? I'm thinking of waiting till 12.1 is out before I switch (since it's less than three weeks away). Will I be able to find at least most of these programs immediately?

Thanks again.

I believe all the standard openSuse packages ship concurrently

the Packman repo(s) may lag a bit, it's pretty important for multimedia and its the largest non-official repo, but the "media" and what they call "essential" repos that it provides are already available for 12.1rc
