KWallet broken?

Sat Nov 26, 2011 3:47 pm
Hi there,

I'm having problems with my KWallet and the network management widget.
When I start my computer and log in, I'm not automatically connected to my wireless. When I try to connect manually using the network management widget in the system tray, I get a dialog window from the KDE Wallet Service telling me
"The application 'KDE Daemon' has requested to open the wallet 'kdewallet'. Please enter the password for this wallet below."

So I enter my password and click on "open". After that the dialog dissapears but all I get is the little red "forbidden sign" over my network management icon in the system tray. When I open the network management widget I can click as often on my wireless as I want, but nothing happens.

What's wrong with my KWallet? This is a clean install and I haven't used the system before.

If I untick the box "Enable the KDE wallet subsystem" in the KDE Wallet Configuration application and reboot, everything works fine.
I can connect to my wireless using the network management widget and surf the internet perfectly fine. Only downside of course: I have to reenter the wireless password each and every time.

Can anybody help me to fix / set up my KWallet?
I'm using Kubuntu 11.10 and KDE 4.7.2

Thanks a lot in advance,

Are you sure your wifi's password was successfully stored in kwallet when you created the connection? You can check this using kwalletmanager. Firstly you need to discover your wifi connection's uuid, a "grep uuid /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/<your connection's name>" should do it. Then you run kwalletmanager, search for that uuid, click on the entry found and then check "Show values".

If no entry is found then there is something wrong with your kwallet configuration. If it is stored there then the problem is probably in Plasma NM. I use Plasma NM everyday with my wifi connection and I have never seen such a problem in my notebook.

What message appear when you hover on Plasma NM's systray icon after entering kwallet's password?

That was the problem, but I couldn't figure out what went wrong.

In the end I just deleted the KWallet files in my home directory and rebooted. I also had to set the wireless password manually via the connection configuration in the network widget. It wouldn't store it in the KWallet if I just entered it in the wireless pop-up dialog.

However, now everything works fine. :)

Thanks for the help.
